Now that the great summer debate has been settled and most California schools will be teaching online instead of opening their classrooms for the fast-approaching school year, parents like Martin Rauchwerk have one request: Reassure us online instruction will be better this time around.

“I forgave them for the spring,” said Rauchwerk, whose younger son will be a junior at San Jose’s Leland High School, “but I’m not going to forgive them for the fall.”

State and local officials say online schooling will look a lot different than in the spring. Districts say they’ll make sure students have computers and check in daily. Those students will also follow a regular bell schedule and be graded, unlike when schools were thrown into chaos after the coronavirus pandemic abruptly shuttered classrooms in March.

https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/07/22/with-most-schools-resuming-fall-classes-online-will-it-work-better-than-in-the-spring/

Online learning requires intrinsically motivated learners. Giving the high school clown or the struggling to read elementary school student a chromebook and a bell schedule is not going to insure education. In addition these kids cannot be left at home alone. Once again chaos will reign supreme in our already fucked up California education system.

Expect more gang violence, wilding in the streets, and even less "equality" of educational outcomes. The kids are screwed.

Corona has been the mother of unanticipated consequences. Parents looking over their children's shoulders into the video feeds will be treated to the spectacle of mediocrity and wasted tax dollars represented by the bulk of the Public Service Union's work product.

Before, they just blindly and blithely sailed the kiddies off into the black box of babysitting, subsidized meals, and playtime.

Just do Khan Academy - it's awesome.

Good for adults to brush up too. Great math stuff

Its 100% up to parents at this point especially for 6th grade down. All teachers should be laid off until schools can restart. One of my sons elective classes was cooking and teacher wanted him to post pics of things he cooked, WTF waste of taxpayer money. This is all a sham shit show.
5   socal2   2020 Jul 22, 12:26pm

My school district just announced that they are going to delay the start of school by 3 weeks and the first 4 weeks will be exclusively online. Hoping to be back to school in October. So another 2 months of kids at home.

Why do these fuckers need an extra 3 weeks to get their online shit together? What have they been doing all Summer and Spring?
6   KgK one   2020 Jul 22, 12:45pm

Technically they can broadcast same material for all students in whole country . 1 hr standard lecture, then 1 hr of help by local teachers. Then another hour of standard lecture. They can eliminate 80% of jobs. But we need jobs to economy going.

We have standardized tests.

Online is the best option after sliced bread. I can't ask more. This is very optimized model to save time and money on both sides.

True, IF you have good kids and you are willing and able to monitor them during the school day. Unfortunately this is not the reality for most families.

School performs a vital babysitting and socialization role.

If yes, please share about your family's experience of pre-COVID classroom learning vs at home.

This will further disenfranchise and retard the intellectual progress of brown youth....then all the whites will be blamed for some reason it'll be our fault, then they will lower college standards even further, and it will be another catalyst for affirmative action to deny whites and asians college admittance. Rinse and repeat now with every virus until the majority of the population in infantilized.

I actually live in california and my kids go to a private christian school. Word from the board is that the all power teachers union will not allow kids back to school until BLM issues addressed. Meanwhile they sit at home, tenured and collecting checks while the kids burn. Very sad situation.

We have middle and high schoolers. The environment around is very competitive relatively. The staff at MS is good but not at HS. We both parents put a lot of effort in guidance and provide additional online paid/free (ex:aops) good quality resources to grow. Being disciplined, pretty much they can follow online instructions, if everything goes online, they can join local sports teams, clubs, volunteer etc. to socialize few hours a week. It may not work for everyone particularly k-5 kids. If state can provide quality online edu, lots of folks get benefited and reduce pressure on schools, that will translate to less taxes.
17   SunnyvaleCA   2020 Jul 23, 11:53am

With all the schools closed, this would have been a perfect time to fire everyone in public "education," break their unions, declare bankruptcy, and start over. Turn Eric Holder's words upside down by using the catastrophe as a benefit to the people instead of a benefit to the government.
18   Blue   2020 Jul 23, 12:23pm

That is $84B for 2020 CA edu budget!
19   Dugan   2020 Jul 23, 12:25pm

Once everything we do is done online we’re effectively in a matrix. All I have to do is control the input areas and what you see. I love what is taking place. I’m a homebody noways!

There should be an immediate 50% cut in school budgets if students aren't schlepping to the physical school. The fact that they made it MORE expensive should be a full stop for everyone concerned (on the taxpayer side that is).

The flip side is that it'll be easier to take screen shots and video clips to show the brainwashing that is happening. Many old people that aren't plugged in still think that k-5 was just like their k-5... learning reading, writing, and arithmetic in a straight-forward way and with minimal political or social agenda.
23   mell   2020 Jul 23, 5:36pm

True. Math haha dream on last session before the break was on the big bullshit leftoid lie of systemic racism. For elementary school kids! Fuck CA and fuck the leftoids endorsimg this idiocracy. Also one teacher said it's not ok to hire teachers to watch over kids in single or group settings during online schooling, because poorer parents cannot afford that! Fuck this asshole maybe they should quit and donate their overpaid salary to a have not family since kids aren't learning squat in school these days anyways. It's more of a glorified daycare, albeit a necessary one. Again, fuck CA!
24   MisdemeanorRebel   2020 Jul 23, 7:26pm

They're really fucking up. There are still people with jobs, but they can't continue forever without child care.

"Just pay for child care?" Then what the fuck if the point of closing schools if ANOTHER 30-something female is going to watch 25 kids instead of the Teacher, plus you have to pay out of pocket?
26   komputodo   2020 Jul 23, 10:58pm

27   RWSGFY   2020 Jul 26, 9:48am

Now that fucking Gayin Newscum has prohibited even private schools to reopen properly I'm actually considering temporarily moving to a neighboring (or even distant) state and enrolling my kids in school there. Spending a winter in SLC actually sounds like tons of fun, with all the skiing and NPs nearby...

This CA school situation is probably the biggest stress my wife and I have encountered as parents.

Some parents want to keep their kids home, fine. Others who don’t should be allowed to send their kids to school.

And why aren’t property taxes being reduced if schools aren’t reopening?? You can’t have it both ways.

Yeah exactly. Fucking teachers offering paid tutoring while they should be teaching. City offering to let kids go to community centers for learning and that’s safe, but school buildings aren’t. It’s fucked up.
33   anonymous   2020 Jul 26, 8:42pm

Teachers work very hard...getting government out of the schools would be great for teachers' salaries. They should be paid more...GOOD teachers can easily make $80K to $100K at an international school.

My cousin is a teacher in SoCal and is a motivated one. A keeper in other words. She's so fucking bored she started taking the Prius out and delivering via instacart. She's getting lots of exercise running around grocery stores. She's through and through Texan but moved here due to her husband.

Some enterprising teachers should set up a semi-home-school shop. Parents still get to drop the kids off and they manage the online education, perhaps through https://www.khanacademy.org/ and the other 'baby-sitting' sort of stuff + questiongs. I think they might be able to handle more kids/educator vs. any other school AND deliver a quality education.

Latest I heard from my school is the unions do not want to open back up until a safe effective vaccine is produced. They think possibly the middle of 2021. We might be able to get our kids back in school next September. Maybe.
