A major Los Angeles teachers union said a slew of left-wing policy proposals will need to be implemented to pay for the cost of safely reopening schools in the Fall.
The United Teachers Los Angeles union called for the defunding of police, a moratorium on new charter schools, new wealth taxes on California’s millionaires and billionaires and Medicare-for-All at the federal level in a research paper issued Thursday.
“It is time to take a stand against Trump’s dangerous, anti-science agenda that puts the lives of our members, our students, and our families at risk,” said United Teachers Los Angeles President Cecily Myart-Cruz.

Black Lives Matter Member Elected To Lead Los Angeles’ Largest Teachers Union
A member of Black Lives Matter who was a keynote speaker at last year’s DSA National Convention has been elected president of the largest teachers union in Los Angeles.

She’s rallied against President Donald J. Trump. She’s pressured politicians to stop building new jails. At a school board meeting in 2017, she took a knee during the Pledge of Allegiance.

Cecily Myart-Cruz captured almost 69% of the vote last week when union members picked her to lead United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), which represents more than 30,000 educators, librarians, and counselors working in the nation’s second-largest public school system. The L.A. Times reports that Myart-Cruz is “the first woman of color” chosen for that position, adding, she “identifies as biracial, black and Latina” and “has long been part of the union’s activist wing.” She has 25 years of experience educating elementary and middle school kids.

“I see teaching as a revolutionary act, just the way I see organizing,” she has said.

Sounds like almost 69% of UTLA represented teachers are garbage who don’t understand what a union is to be used for. Time to tell them to get back to work or get fucked. Bring your own personal respirator with biological cans if you’re that worried about contracting SARS-CoV2
3   Shaman   2020 Jul 16, 6:22am

Time to just shut them down and stop paying the commie fucks. They already are on de facto strike, and kids won’t be educated or monitored or anything. If the mayor had any balls he would just lay them all off and tell them to pick out a nice online school.

And somebody around here said that they weren't progressive indoctrinators? It's a good excuse to fire them all and start from scratch. They aren't schools any more, they have evolved into something entirely different, and taxpayer money should not be funding them. All those empty tax dollars are going to subversives and have finally achieved the ultimate government bureaucratic status of NOT doing the job they were set out and paid to do, with their outlandish pay, benefits and retirement to boot.

Parade out photo shoots of wonderful, dedicated teachers in front of stage managed healthy and well behaved mixed race classrooms? The Teachers' Union in California are evil. They are like a Chinese Communist propaganda poster from the olden days.

At least the shroud is lifted for all to see what they truly are.

As a member of the NJEA, I can tell you that the rank and file teachers have about zero to do with anything their union leaders do. We can't even run a legitimate election to unseat the local union reps because they fix the votes.

Her students will require years of deprogramming.
8   Ceffer   2020 Jul 16, 7:14am

Then the unions should be abolished. Nothing good ever came from a public service union for the taxpayers and the public. If they go on strike for any reason, they can be fired and replaced with online courses. It's a Gordian knot that can only be cut. They are a Progressive patronage network riding on the back of the taxpayer.
9   zzyzzx   2020 Jul 16, 8:06am

If the schools can be done online, it can be outsourced to India or Philippines for pennies. Break the union that way.

Parents are mad because they have their kids at home all day.

Yes, but no one in government has balls to do it. Because it’s a DNC club out here. Even Republicans here act like castrated dogs and don’t speak up.

Public sector unions are a drain on GDP and real productivity. It allows shitty employees to be protected by not only the union, but also the government itself. Outside of getting plastered on the job, you're almost invincible once you get one of those jobs. There's no motivation to be productive. Especially when you see a bunch of other hacks not working and not getting fired. It's a flawed system.

Private sector, do what you want. If you can unionize and think that's best, do it. As someone that like to be the best, I can't stand seeing people at the same pay level doing less than I do. It brings down moral and disincentivizes people to go above and beyond. Unions tend to destroy things because not everyone has equal skills yet they negotiate the pay to be the same for one position.

Ok then. Give them what they want: Close those schools. That means everyone who work in those schools get laid off.

Sounds like a plan. Have the kids sign up for one of the many online schools out there

They could not do a worse job than the online offerings from our current public school teachers.

It's because of these folks that the Democrats in our state chose Newsom over Villaraigosa.

Public employee unions, particularly teacher unions, in Villaraigosa's backyard backed Newsom because Villaraigosa had the temerity to suggest that poor families could benefit if they had some choice about where their kids could be educated.

You can try contacting the mental health professionals in your area. The number of children under 18 who have died from Covid is just a handful. They do not close the schools for the seasonal flu which kills thousands and thousands of children per year. Logically, the people in charge of your school district suffer some form of mental illness.

Daycares will be offering virtual learning assistance and be on the lookout for other organizations like gyms or other kid orientated athletic facilities offering school programs with virtual academy assistance with a “school experience.”
Parents are just cobbling this shit together old school to create some kind of program that works for them and their kids while the state goes fucking crazy.

For a working parent like myself this is not good. Kids are bored, they need friends. Education is more shit than ever, now it’s obvious since I get to see it. Teachers union prevents teachers from getting online training so they don’t know what they are doing. This Shit is stupid now.

“ U.S.—Teachers who have been enjoying the extended time off due to COVID concerns are eager for it to continue. Desperate to avoid returning to the classroom in the fall while still getting paid for it, teachers have come together to launch an “Every Child Left Behind” movement.

Citing concerns of possible exposure to the virus, teachers have expressed that they will not be returning until their safety can be guaranteed. They also do not want to be bothered by teaching online, either. “We don’t want some kids falling behind and other, more privileged kids learning online.” said Director of Education Susan Birchfield, “No! We say all kids should have their education equally hindered.”

“My greatest joy in life is teaching my wonderful, little angels, but if I can not go to work and still get paid then see ya later, snot-nosed brats!” said 2019 teacher of the year Kathy Frazzelbum as she floated by in her pool tube while sipping a piña colada.

“Kids have their entire lives to learn. It’s not like these are formative years that could leave their education stunted and trailing behind the rest of the world,” explained teacher’s union founder Trish McDonald.

Teachers across the nation expressed their utmost thanks to the taxpayers and assured them that this was money well spent. “I am much more productive as a teacher thanks to the Every Child Left Behind movement. Now I can go run errands as I please and instead of grading papers I can binge Netflix!”

At publishing time, the teacher’s union was planning a series of strikes to continue the Every Child Left Behind movement until a cure for all sickness and death was found.

They had a teacher on the radio talking about new business. For $30-100hr a teacher will come to your home and teach up to 3-4 kids. Of course I wouldn't doubt that many are getting full salary and doing this on the side or at the same time.

Can't teach in class but can go to home and to it, total scam.
23   BayArea   2020 Jul 31, 12:28am

If they can’t/won’t teach in person, I like the idea of outsourcing video teaching to India or China for pennies on the taxdollar

Reminds me of my Grandma under Britain's National Health Service. She needed to be seen about glaucoma and the NHS doc told Grandma it would take 11 months to see someone about making an appointment. But if she were to pay out of pocket, she could have an appointment with that same doc in two weeks. Did not turn out bad though, because Grandma wrote a letter to the Prime Minister (John Major at the time), and he actually responded and forced the doc to see her immediately.

Maybe any moonlighting teachers need to be turned in as well. Otherwise, the shutdown will have a disproportionate effect on working people who cannot afford private lessons.

That’s already going to happen no matter what. This year will be a lost year that exacerbates inequalities.
I’m sending my youngest to private school this year, because I can afford it and she wouldn’t do well with online. Her best friend is signed up for the same school and class. Her friend is black and her parents can also afford it, just in case anyone wanted to simplify this down to racial lines. It’s a class thing. If you’re struggling or just barely making it, your kids will suffer this year. If you have extra money, your kids are going to be just fine.

Yes. If every one truly wanted to show solidarity, all government paychecks should be decreased 10% for the duration of any lockdown. That includes Congress, gov employees, SS, military retirement, SS, and welfare. Too many government check types not feeling any pain, and instead getting a free vacation of sorts. Since the tax revenue is decreased during a lockdown, the gov needs to cut back just like a business must do after a forced to lock down.
