#shortageofglassvials-coronavirusBigpicturescience.org is a podcast that comes out each Monday. It is science for the layperson. The podcast yesterday was about obscure facts relating to coronavirus. When we get a prescription from the pharmacy, it generally comes in a plastic bottle. Those of you who are diabetics and take insulin know that your medicine comes in a rugged glass vial. When we have a valid and proven coronavirus vaccine, its widespread dissemination might be held up six months due to a shortage of glass vials. There is only one firm in the US that produces glass vials. All glass comes from silica or sand. Sand mining operations around the world are not producing enough silica. One Silicon Valley company came up with an ingenious vial that is plastic on the outside with a glass lining. This has not been accepted yet.
This is unequivocally false. If true we simply could ask beverage makers to stop using glass bottles. I'm sure you will be able to put probably 20-30 doses in one 12 ounce beer bottle. Maybe 100 in a handle sized bottle of vodka. Maybe less, who knows. But go to any liquor store and come back and tell me there's an actual shortage of glass available.
Switching just bottled beer to aluminum for 1 month would free up enough glass to make enough vials for the entire world. I have no doubt about that.
How much sand does it take anyway? I image 10 dump truck loads probably makes a fuckload of bottles. Factor in recycling I'm not even certain how one could think we have a potential glass shortage for tiny vials for a vaccine. Weird thought by the OP and likely shit info from bigpicturescience.org Methinks someone got click baited.
