Trump has to continue to bring up the Schools issue.

The way Dems are going, they'll take the stupid bait and announce in state after state, they're closing schools or going part time only.

Suburban mom vote will be lost - not just married and employed, but also single and employed. Can't possibly swing childcare costs.

How are essential workers supposed to work if schools (which are essential) are closed down??

And if you have a medical professional in the family, good luck getting a babysitter to step foot into your house.

Teachers in my kids district are upset they have to teach online from classroom because nobody to watch thier kids boohoo. No more at home collecting check working 30min from home.

Agreed - same deal here.

And yet daycare can stay open unless that has changed. And I bet they will force shut-down of private schools as well. Newsom has already stopped the movement to home schooling and alternative education (where you could take a 3k credit) and guaranteed school funding based on previous year enrollment (so if people move or stop attending public, doesn't impact finances). School funding is a joke anyway because it is not "$ per student" but the more kids you have on "free lunch" programs the more that district gets per student. As always, "all kids are equal but some are more equal than others and get more".... too funny.

This has nothing to do with safety but is simply about the school teacher union wanting to work from home vs in person. Yes - safety is a concern - but if it is so "dangerous" then why are day care centers open, stores, etc... And, frankly, teaching should be deemed essential as it allows both parents to work, etc... Teachers don't like it, but they are by design professional babysitters - and I don't mean to use that word disparagingly as it is important for our economy. We are not a "single earner" family country anymore. They are compensated with high salaries, good pensions, and open summers....

Basically, CA doesn't value education, and the unions are powerful.

I wonder what OC is doing? I thought they were going to be "in person" or is Gov's "order" vs a "suggestion"? I think his final decision is not until Friday - correct?

Online high school in our district was a "shit show."
8   krc   2020 Jul 16, 4:54pm

And, if schools move to completely online, why are we not getting rid of half the teachers? With online recording, etc... and automated testing, there is no reason you can't collapse and get rid of at least half of all district teachers. So, if we are going to go to online teaching, at least we will benefit from cost reduction due to scale - BUT THAT WON'T HAPPEN and we all know it. :)

Agree as well. Then, if we go to a truly online model, districts have some pretty valuable land. Maybe you do a partial model where you meet with teacher as a small group monthly. You consolidate down to 1 high school instead of 3.

Really, we should see significant cost and structural changes if we mandate no in-person teaching. And, if they are confident that can be successful, then why not reduce costs? Or, do they "know" this is going to be a failure and they simply don't care. They will ride-out this "teach from home" for a year or two, keep their jobs, and then go back to the traditional model at some point.... They will WANT online to fail, but enjoy the perks in the meantime.

"The County Office of Education" has just about no budget and no authority over school districts. It can make highfalutin policy recommendations all it wants, but that's what they are: policy recommendations.

Not me. I fucking hate kids.
15   Shaman   2020 Jul 17, 8:50am

I have a third grader and a sixth grader and an eighth grader. The older two can handle online or whatever hybrid winds up being done, but the younger girl needs in person schooling. It was an absolute nightmare last semester and the curriculum was garbage. And then none of it wound up counting for anything because of “hold harmless.” Half the junior high and high school kids just stopped doing any work at all a couple months from the end of the year and nothing changed.

I agree that suburban moms are going to be lost to the Democrats with this. It’s an unbelievable bind they’re putting us in, those of us with younger kids and two working parents are especially screwed.

And I love their “solution” for parents: “one parent should quit their job to stay home with the kids.”

So we should lose our jobs and homes and get poor so teachers can sit at home and collect checks for doing very little?

It’s maddening.

We are about to pull the trigger on private school for the youngest one. Sanity is worth a lot.

Yes very much so! She’s social and needs social contact to make the education mean something. She’s bored and unhappy staying at home and will drive us crazy with her response to these feelings.
I want all my kids back in school in person full time but I don’t have the ability to control that.

No I am not worried about Covid. It’s a minor cold for most people. A lot of people I know have had it recently and none of them were very sick. Maybe it’s mutated to be less harmful. Viruses do that.
Hell, I had a cold last week that scored most of the symptoms, but wasn’t severe enough to make me miss work. Was it the Rona? Quite possibly. I’m not getting tested though, for several reasons:
1)if I test positive then I have two weeks off and have to jump through hurdles to get back to work
2)if I test positive I have to quarantine and won’t be able to inadvertently spread it around.
3)we need herd immunity to get past this thing, and quarantine defeats the process
21   Shaman   2020 Jul 17, 9:51am

Oh and I am fine with Trump wanting in person school. I WISH he could mandate that but I don’t think he has the power.
He’s just following the experts on this one. The academy of pediatrics recommended this. So did the NAS. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/07/nas-report-urges-school-districts-prioritize-reopening

This is something that experts around the world understand, and it should be followed but instead Democrats are digging in their heels and squealing like the porkers they are. Fuck them.

My wife, kids and our friends with kids are ALL very anxious to send our kids back to school.

Especially my daughter who is so bummed she is missing out on band, sports and socializing with her friends.

Believe over 80% of our school's survey wanted in-person class this Fall.

What is really aggravating is that daycare and after-school programs are remaining open (so far). We will see the final order from Newsom, and if he doesn't close the daycare providers then you know this is all about the CTA and not about preventing covid spread. Teacher union is powerful. The online "classes" during spring was a complete shit-show.

If online "was" successful then you might at least get rid of half the teachers and staff, consolidate schools (make money from selling valuable land), etc... but the CTA will make sure the "education" will be ineffective as well. Already in our area, daycares are promoting that they will guide the kids through the online work form the "schools". He is also forcing private and religious schools to follow the same regulations, so that again also protects the CTA: ensuring public school funding at par to previous year even if kids stop attending and go to home schooling, and protects the teacher's pay, benefits, and job protection.

The idea that CA wants fewer "week to week" cases is not realistic as we test more. They should be looking at R values (transmission rates) and make a determination. And, I think this hurts Trump as he is seen as ineffective in this area. I think the administration didn't realize that in CA and the west generally, schools open early August and not in the fall anymore.

It also is another indicator that education simply is not valued in the US. In the EU, most schools are opening as normal or with a hybrid model. Asia is fully open. Those are highly unionized countries (EU), but education is valued and they can evaluate risks better in general than the US.

The last six months broke the straw on the camels back. The flight out of California that's coming might dwarf all others. Many I know are making plans which are made even easier with current market. Sunny Detroit with ton of Mexicans is in CA future, one large earthquake and this place turns into TJ overnight and nothing can stop it.

Trump was late to the game here. He could have tried to declare schools an essential service, but has not. Not sure that means anything anyway. If we want and support state rights, then I don't see him overriding the Governors. But he should at least point out the hypocrisy of keeping daycare and after-school programs open. This is just a "union thing" with zero concern for children and zero concern for dual income families. CTA sucks and will make sure online education is a shit show as it was in the spring. CTA does NOTHING "for the kids".

Education is funded at a local level. Most federal funding is for higher education, and very little is k-12. There is not much he can influence by manipulating the purse strings.

That said, if I didn't live near the coast and live in a well run city - I would have bailed long ago.

https://edsource.org/2020/as-pandemic-spreads-gov-newsom-expected-to-impose-stricter-regulations-for-school-opening-and-closing/636475

Looks like schools will be closed if this is accurate. And reopening isn’t a realistic possibility under these guidelines.
Therefore parents need to find other options.

One option is daycare with assisted learning with online education. Honestly that is going to be the most popular, but there’s not going to be enough daycare centers to keep up with demand. A local gym in my neighborhood is offering a “school experience” until 3PM where coaches and parents help the kids work through virtual academy programs. I’m strongly considering this for one to two of my kids. Getting them out of the house and interacting with other kids and people is essential for their mental health and development. And no I am not even considering Covid a hazard. It’s a fucking hoax.
32   socal2   2020 Jul 17, 11:01am

Dude, we pay taxes for a service that is supposed to be provided. I'm not sure where you're going in this thread. You just said you don't have kids in the school system. Why do you even care?

If your house was burning and the fire department didn't show because they were afraid they might get a cold, pretty sure you'd be pissed. That is exactly what is happening across the country. There's no logic. Teachers teach or they don't get paid. There's no in between if the kids are at home 100% of the time. They're not teaching.

I have two high schoolers. I don't think it is that strong of a view but yes that is the reason why I am "upset." Friends I have with no kids don't care and aren't bothered by the inconsistency. It makes no sense to have after school programs and day care available but education remote. This is ALL about the CTA. Get woke.

If Newsom shuts the daycares, then I wouldn't be so upset as it is at least consistent. Too bad we don't value education to the level the rest of the world does.

It's kind of like vax versus anti-vax, heroic aggressive medicine for a child with a terminal diagnosis vs hospice.

It's a personal decision that will be informed by the personal values of parents of what they think is best for their kids.

You are correct to point out that thankfully I don't have my own kids in this situation as mine are done with K-12. Just nieces and nephews, all in Northern California, in grades from K - 9. As uncle I have a lot of empathy for their parents. I keep my mouth shut and let them vent at me. Even though they're nieces and nephews, they're not my kids.

I agree with you all that the prerogatives of Public Employee Unions should not be what drives these decisions.
