When the Public Broadcasting Act was signed into law in 1967, the stated goal was to provide public financial assistance to producers and broadcasters of educational programming. And so PBS and NPR came into existence. They enjoy public funding from taxpayers today. But should taxpayers continue to fund these enterprises, when they clearly focus less on educating the public, and more on pushing commentary and opinion, and now, even libel? ...

This weekend NPR published a story on their website by journalist Hannah Allam. The tweet to the story, declared that ‘right-wing extremists are turning cars into weapons, with reports of at least 50 vehicle-ramming incidents since protests erupted nationwide in late May.’ The image accompanying the tweet was a photo of a vehicle surrounded by protesters, suggesting that the driver was plowing through them as they stood in the street. That is not what happened.

The photograph was of a driver from Louisville, Kentucky and an as yet identified black woman, who found herself fleeing after assailants blocked her car. One attacker pulled a gun. ... But none of this mattered to NPR. The driver was described as a right-wing extremist, targeting peaceful protesters.

The NPR piece did not take into account the threat to life drivers find themselves in when surrounded by rioters (the name Reginald Denny should ring a bell to any driver who finds themselves in these situations). Instead it classifies such incidents as right-wing extremist attacks.

This is not journalism. It certainly should not be funded by the public. It serves no educational purpose. It’s time for courageous politicians to stand up and demand the elimination of NPR’s public funding.

We need politicians with BALLS. Not the milksop worms we have now.

This! I'd really like to see both PBS and NPR defunded. Or only fund PBS nature shows. So long as those are political.

Agreed both are totally left wing mouthpieces no longer neutral.

What to do then with right wing mouthpieces that are not neutral ?

What is the solution to achieve political neutrality in the media ?

Who gives a fuck so long as it's not heavily subsidized by tax payers.

Too bad not enough people feel that way about the Nation Building exercises we get involved in along with many other things our taxes are used for.

Ron Paul did, and he was re-districted out of his congressional district by TX R's.
We should not be funding NPR, PBS, and nation building, and we should not bomb Syria and other assorted shithole countries unless they attack us.

You can't have unbiased reporting; too many biases. I occasionally enjoy NPR and PBS. It's good to get the communist view. It's scary to think that some people believe everything they air.

Term limits, campaign contribution limits or publicly funded elections would be a nice start to end the langiappe on both sides of the aisle.

agreed 100%. Term limits + some limitations as to what politicians can do after their terms are over. If you voted for Boeing contracts, then perhaps you can never accept money from Boeing.

DILLIGAF says
Then try and get everyone to agree what constitutes Journalism vs. Anti-Journalism. Not sure anyone will ever live to see that any many other situations resolved to an amicable end.

Difficult to do, as journalwhores will twist any "rules" and "regulations". I don't see how to fix this, especially since politicians may benefit from skewed "reporting". See Iraq WMD's in NYT, or reports on peaceful violence in protests more recently

this point seem to be lost no matter how many times I have stated as much but try some more if you must.

What's your point?

And don't forget that it's not all about you. We're talking about whether our government should fund propaganda.

whether our government should fund propaganda.

only externally - like in cold or hot war, and directed against enemies. Nothing directed towards citizens of USA

You want to defund the government.

That solves all problems.
