That's what it feels like, although there is a big hole in the market for a better social media platform than Facebook.

It's not terribly hard to set up a $5/month server at Digital Ocean or similar and invite your friends to send their public ssh keys so you can create accounts for them and they won't even need a password to use it.

Then you can share everything in private (well, the hosting company could see things). Everyone could just run rsync to get the latest files and messages.

I should write some shell scripts for this to show how easy it is.
