Good find I was suspecting something like this as the explanation for the variety of reactions from no symptoms to severe illness.

Almost all colds are caused by rhino viruses which belong to the family of enteroviruses, they most likely don't help with immunity here. Few of the colds are caused by other coronaviruses though in which case prior infection may give you at least partial immunity to sars-cov-2, esp. if you had a coronavirus infection/cold recently, i.e. in the past few years.
