Can't believe I lived to this point without hearing about this until now.

There is a kind of vulture called a lammergeier which eats tortoises by dropping them from a great height to break open their shells.

The Greek playwright Aeschylus died in 458 BC when a lammergeier mistook "his bald head for a rock suitable for shattering the shell" of a tortoise.

I have seen seagulls around here do that with clams. If you are sitting on a bench next to a concrete path by the beach, you have to watch not to get hit by a falling clam a seagull dropped to break it open on the concrete.

Anthony Fauci has recommended never be outside without a hardhat for this reason.
People ignore him at their peril.

The name lammergeyer originates from German Lämmergeier, which means "lamb-vulture". The name stems from the belief that it attacked lambs. That's a pretty cool animal if it has learned to crack bones by dropping them onto rocks.

True, could just be cover for an ancient Hillary.

But it's also remotely plausible. Those things really do drop tortoises out of the sky.

It's a big damn bird, it's probably the inspiration of the Griffin.
