"In 10 years" Gavin Newsom pledged on June 30, 2004, "the worst of San Francisco’s homeless problem will be gone. The most seriously ill homeless people will be moved indoors, clearing downtown streets of in-your-face transients who were startling residents and tourists alike. Emergency shelters will cease to exist because nobody would need them", he said. "And new arrivals to the streets would be helped immediately."

“This is a dramatic shift,” Newsom announced as he unveiled his “Ten Year Plan to Abolish Chronic Homelessness.” “This won’t all happen tomorrow. But it will get done.”

He almost had the problem solved until he was elected governor.

The first phase of his foolproof program is to abdicate and appoint a nice, sensible conservative Republican as governor.

I notice the target date is safely past his administration life expectancy, just like those 'lifetime guarantees' where the merchants take a powder never to be found again.

From the article:

"The Safe Sleeping Village model is being piloted as a short-term, temporary method of establishing minimum health and safety standards for homeless people in settings where services like food, water, sanitation and healthcare can be more effectively provided," Jonathan Streeter, the interim lead public information officer for the Homelessness Joint Information Center said in a statement. "San Francisco city agencies, through the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing continue to work with individuals on longer-term solutions."

Just build them some barracks in Fresno with one way bus rides for all the "Safe Sleeping Village " citizens.

I dunno, with the real estate prices in California, those taped off squares are worth some coin. Then you have to add in the value of the detached bathroom with attendants, free meals, and all you have to pay for is dope. What's not to like. However, if it catches on more will move there putting social distancing in peril again.

There’s a lot of money in this. An unsolvable problem to fleece tax dollars forever. Talk about a cash cow for the left.

As an open-borders sancutary city, any improvement of the downtrodden will just result in larger numbers of the downtrodden coming from around the globe. What's Newsom's plan to house 4 billion people? Meanwhile, if it weren't politically incorrect, I could abolish homelessness in 10 days ... where's my shotgun?!!?
14   Misc   2020 May 20, 9:47pm

I think some of the more enterprising homeless are getting FHA loans on their taped off squares. So are they really homeless at that point?

“The real reason why the encampment inhabitants refuse to access the shelters is simple — the shelters have rules. One rule, in particular, keeps the encampment inhabitants out of shelters and that rule is that drugs and drug use are prohibited.”

The accurate word for what we call “homeless encampments” is “open drug scenes”

Around the world they threaten public safety & are only dealt with through coordinated services AND (not or) law enforcement

In California, politicians act helpless to deal with them

I’ve interviewed over 100 U.S. experts, politicians, and activists and none knew of Europe’s experience breaking them up

Most thought Europe had used harm reduction alone, which is false

“Homeless” is a propaganda word designed to confuse

It inappropriately combines addicts, the seriously mentally ill, with poor people who don’t have an addiction or mental illness problem

We can’t address the problem if we don’t describe what it is

In the 5 European cities, all passed through a phase identical to the one California is in now, where progressives insisted that the open drug scenes could be solved through helping services alone. After that failed, they all used a combo of services plus law enforcement

We Americans tend to be provincial and anti-intellectual and so it’s not surprising that even our leading experts are ignorant about what Europe actually did

But the urgency of the addiction, OD, and public safety crisis means there should be no more excuses

Please, if you really care about this issue, read the paper below. It’s not that long. It’s fascinating. It’s not behind a paywall. It debunks the misinformation about Portugal and the Netherlands. They didn’t legalize! They didn’t just hand out heroin!

Right, society has rules, and if you refuse to follow them, you have to go to jail. There's just no other way. I wrote about this last year.

SF homeless number around 10,000. If San Francisco’s Limousine Liberals (Walter Shorenstein et al), abetted by the Redevelopment Agency, had not torn down DOZENS of S.R.O. hotels they would not all be sleeping and shitting on the streets.
In the early 1970’s an estimated 4,000 SRO units were demolished by the Agency largely in the South of Market neighborhood for their Yerba Buena Center project. Thousands more S.R.O. units were razed for redevelopment of the Embarcadero Center and Western Addition neighborhoods.
The same thing happened in cities across America. The people that claim to have solutions now are the same daft fucks that caused the problem to begin with.

What do you mean "becoming"?

Silly Con Valley USED to be a technological powerhouse. Now the main thing they produce is propaganda and censorship. This shithole is only relevant to communists and dictator cock-suckers now.

Did newscum actually make any progress on the SF homeless problem when he promised victory within 10yrs, back in 2004?

I imagine he was let off the hook due to the 2008 crash, but I'm curious if some people thought he did well. I've heard many a lib say they elected newscum to tackle the states homeless problem, which implies at least some people think he was adept for the task.

He was elected because he was a dummycrat.

Stop believing that the vast majority of people vote for actual reasons. They're fucking stupid, and shouldn't vote at all. They have no principles.

The evil(and I am not using that word lightly) leftists in LA have now moved to falsely claiming that most chronic homeless are not addicts.

I actually had to start saying “chronic homeless” because the leftists and media, much like they did with illegal aliens and immigrants, have begun conflating the chronic homeless with those who temporarily live in their cars or live with friends and retain jobs, which is not the common understanding of the term “homeless”.

This is true, sadly.

But just as the FAGAT rose by finding ways around the old systems of centralized control, new companies may undermine the FAGAT companies.

The one thing you can be sure of is that these new companies will not come from Silicon Valley. The game is over here. The FAGATs won and stomped nearby all innovation into the earth. Very much like Microsoft before them.

I am not a FanBoy of the region. I grew up here before it was Silicon Valley. I had a front row seat to all the changes, including working in the trenches of tech. But I am not a FanBoy.

So, I say this not as a FanBoy. I got sick and tired of hearing people pine for the "next big thing" when things got slow.

There is so much technology development going on in the region, it can make your head spin. Not desktop computer "tech" development that can be done remotely from Bangalore or wherever. I mean real technology development going on, with hardware, mechanical engineering, molecular engineering, etc., under the Hipster Radar. Some of it at shitty little companies, some at household name companies. Some of these will pan out into commercial breakthroughs. And I don't mean some silly Hipster App.

I know some folks who work in these gigs. I am related to some of them.

The best thing for these new technologies to flourish in this region, will be a Big Local Toilet Flush of the High-Priced Hipster Class.

What some bullshit mRNA/DNA vaccine from Genentech? A better way to track your activities and spy on you from Google? Some bullshit green energy garbage that won't fucking work?

And ironically, this was the actual goal. We had to centralize in order to allow decentralization of information world wide.

You have any idea how freaking easy it is to talk to somebody in a remote, nation today? 30 years ago, talking to somebody from Russia, China, Libya, even Australia or France - that was extremely difficult if not impossible. People are FINALLY starting to realize the power they have, FINALLY.

And Google, and Facebook, and the other fucks are trying to do the exact opposite - centralize in order to control information. That's doomed, doesn't matter how much money is dumped into them. They're sinking ships.

Rickwicks, like I said, I am not a FanBoy of "all things tech". Much of it is bullshit. Some roll-up-sleeves get-your-hands-dirty things going on are not bullshit. Some commercialized already, fabulous commercial successes. Next generation stuff in their pipelines, next generation stuff in pipeline is development, also. Some of the new stuff will not pan out, like Solyndra or Trilogy or whatever. Some may even be frauds like Theranos. But some will be fabulous successes. Some already are.

I hear your cynicism and your snark. I share your cynicism. I liked it here a whole lot better before it was "Silicon Valley". But that said, the technology development continues. I think a threat to it will be the high cost of living and doing business here, which has been brought on by too many people coming here from all over the USA and all over the world like Asia, inflating the prices to match the inflating egos.
