Oxiris Barbot is an American pediatrician who has served as the Commissioner of Health of the City of New York since 2018. She is the first Latina and first Puerto Rican to head the Health Department.

Her response to the 2020 coronavirus outbreak in New York City has been controversial.

On February 7, she said "We’re telling New Yorkers, go about your lives, take the subway, go out, enjoy life.... And so we know that this virus can be transmitted from one individual to another, but that it’s typically people who live together. That there’s no risk at this point in time—we’re always learning more—about having it be transmitted in casual contact, right?"

On March 2 she said that people can't contract coronavirus through casual, short-term exposure, but instead require prolonged exposure to the infected person's secretions.[17] At a press conference on March 3, Barbot said: "We are encouraging New Yorkers to go about their everyday lives".

On March 4, she said: "There’s no indication that being in a car, being in the subways with someone who’s potentially sick is a risk factor."

On March 5 she said that New Yorkers without symptoms should not have to quarantine.

On March 20 Barbot warned that masks should only be used by people who are showing symptoms, saying: "The time to use a mask is when someone is symptomatic, when they’re coughing, when they’re sneezing, and it’s to ensure that that individual doesn’t contaminate other folks. It gives people who are asymptomatic a false sense of security that if they wear this mask, they don’t have to wash their hands, they don’t have to cover their mouths and their noses when they cough or they sneeze."

In early April, New York City Councilmen Democrat Robert Holden and Republican Eric Ulrich wrote to Mayor de Blasio asking him to relieve Barbot of her position "before it’s too late," saying her guidance on coronavirus had been disastrous.

Can anybody name anything useful that NYC produces? List anything they make. What does that shitty do?

I live in Silicon Valley. Whatever you're using to read this, it's almost certainly got at least some of our work in it even if it's an entirely Chinese made device.

If NYC slid into the sea, as a person that grew up in "upstate" NY, the rest of NY would be breaking into bars and buying rounds, or stealing them. They would, of course, reimburse the owner. We're not the assholes of NYC that do nothing other than run fraudulent financial schemes, and bleed out the resources from the rest of the state.

If the state is very lucky, the population of NYC will be in quarantine, walled off, and forgotten.
