Rhode Island police began stopping cars with New York plates Friday. On Saturday, the National Guard will help them conduct house-to-house searches to find people who traveled from New York and demand 14 days of self-quarantine.

“Right now we have a pinpointed risk,” Governor Gina Raimondo said. “That risk is called New York City.”

New York is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S., on Friday reporting a total of 44,000 cases.

Rhode Island has just over 200, and it has begun an aggressive campaign to keep the virus out and New Yorkers contained, over objections from civil liberties advocates.

Raimondo, a Democrat, said she had consulted lawyers and said while she couldn’t close the border, she felt confident she could enforce a quarantine.

Seaside Retreat

Many New Yorkers have summer houses in Rhode Island, especially in tony Newport, and the governor said the authorities would be checking there.

“Yesterday I announced and today I reiterated: Anyone coming to Rhode Island in any way from New York must be quarantined,” the governor said. “By order. Will be enforced. Enforceable by law.”

Raimondo signed an executive order Thursday that applies to anyone who has been in New York during the past two weeks and through at least April 25. It doesn’t apply to public health, public safety, or health-care workers.

White House Calls For 14-Day Quarantine For All Leaving New York

National Guard members will be stationed at the T.F. Green airport, Amtrak train stations and at bus stops. The citizen-soldiers will be following up with people at local residences. The maximum penalty for not complying: a fine of $500 and 90 days in prison.

The local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union blasted the new rules, objecting to the collection of motorists’ contact information in particular.

“While the Governor may have the power to suspend some state laws and regulations to address this medical emergency, she cannot suspend the Constitution,” Rhode Island ACLU executive director Steven Brown said in a statement. “Under the Fourth Amendment, having a New York state license plate simply does not, and cannot, constitute ‘probable cause’ to allow police to stop a car and interrogate the driver, no matter how laudable the goal of the stop may be.”

Police Stops

Just before 1 p.m. Friday, state police were set up on Interstate 95 northbound, at the rest stop closest to the Connecticut border. A mile or two before that, motorists could see signs ordering all New York passenger vehicles to pull over at the rest stop.

One trooper could be seen there, checking license plates as cars went by. At the stop itself, a number of officers were assembled around a tent, ready to question vehicle occupants.

Wow when your Governor and Mayor are such Commie nematodes, they turn you into a fugitive just by association.

So they can hunt down New Yorkers but not illegal aliens?

lol!

In all honesty, I'd get out of any major city in the country soon, so I don't blame New Yorkers. I think the actions the authorities are going to start taking are going to be super draconian in the coming days and weeks. Rural and small towns are going to be the places you want to be.

I'm not predicting anything apocalyptic, but cities are cesspools for this virus. Actions will be taken that we've never even thought could happed to stop the spread. We are honestly thinking of booking up a beach house in FL for a month. Drive or fly down and just chill. We're still a couple months from nice weather in IL, so why not go south?

Problem is...NYC infections are bleeding into the surrounding areas. The people that left NYC for their summer homes have caused significant spread.

Agree. But it's going to spread regardless. So even if a rural(ish) area gets it, it's much more difficult to spread if you're just chillin' in the vacation home. It's spreading like wildfire in cities that are basically shut down besides essential services. So even the shut down is doing little to stop the spread.

I'm convinced that old people are the problem. They're not heeding any of this. I'm gonna go out for the 2nd time in 14 days today. If it's anything like the other day, the demographics are going to be people that 100% should have stayed home. We'll see.

Florida went from just a few hundred cases to thousands over night, all in part because of the disastrous way those Commie Liberals handled the containment. Or lack there of.

The problem is, these people aren't chilling in their vacation homes. They are out and about walking the boardwalks because they don't care. I have a neighbor...who owns a shore home in NJ. 3 days after the shit literally hit the fan here...they decided to go to vacation in Aruba. Well, that got cut short when they shut down the hotels there and finally Trump told them, if they don't come back now, they will have trouble getting back. So they flew back on Friday and were ordered to undergo a 14 day quarantine. They went through an airport that is now the most infested region in the country. Quite possibly, the worst place you could have gone through.

They have not obeyed the quarantine one bit. The concept of social distancing to them is non-existent. They have managed to make physical contact with 7 different neighbors. They have also been all over town, liquor stores, supermarkets, garden stores. If they are infected, I'm sure its only a few more days before they go to the shore and reek havoc there. That's why I applaud the RI governor because they should be checked up on. A lot of people just can't be trusted. A simple drive by will confirm that their kids are all over the neighborhood and that they are ignoring all safety precautions.

I will agree that seniors are a major problem as well. Most of them have lost their ability to logically reason and are also all over the fucking place. My MIL thinks it's great that she can now shop at Wal Mart for useless shit and avoid big crowds.

If you are old and infirm, and going to die soon anyway, why not just go out and live your life like normal?

If you saw how long the lines usually are at my local Walmart, you would also consider it worth the risk to go now.

She doesn't know how right she is.

Much the deliberate harm done to the US working class was done by fucks in NYC for profit.

Totally agree. I know what's coming next though. We're going to be arrested and detained if we go out if you're a non-essential worker. I'm statistically not going to die from this, but I have been taking it seriously. I've left the house once in I think 13-14 days now. We have a fenced yard so the dog is all good. So I don't even walk the streets of my small town. Our kids have legit stayed on our property and haven't left during that time and we're "locked" down until April 7th best case.

I get people are hurting for money, but I couldn't understand my one time traveling outside why it was all old people. Why spend money at Home Depot or a grocery store, during an outbreak, and you have a 10-15% old age dying from a virus? There were 3 women that literally couldn't walk in the grocery store in electric carts. WTF? It doesn't compute. I'd be hoarding cash right now and not spending it. They also didn't look like they needed food and the reason they needed the cart was because they were fat and probably diabetic. Anecdotal, but that was my observation.

I go out every day. Every fucking day. Traffic creeps up every day too, as more people realize that this is bullshit. No particular demographic is seen. It's everyone.

If you're in CA I can imagine that. I'm in the farm fields of IL. There's not much to do here most times anyway, so with restaurants/bars closed, young people that can are just staying home. Jerking off and playing video games. Old people are running around like mutha fuckers here though.

If I could turn back the clock and have this happen when I was say 20, this would be a fantastic time to be alive with a young hot chick. My god. It's an actual possibility my dick could fall off.

A portable, directional Alexia that detects the slightest hint of a New York accent from 100 yards, and then get them in your sights.

I already have someone from NYC who wants to come visit me to “escape New York”.

Let’s make a deal, I’ll be Wayne Brady and you be the female in a silly outfit.
