I have a website that needs to become CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) compliant.

There are at least 3 career software(?) developers on Patrick.net.

Do any of you have experience in helping companies gain CCPA compliance? Or do you
have advice on how to go about becoming compliant?

Thanks in advance

Vote Republican.

Does the State provide guidelines? Will you be doing E-commerce, or they worried someone might say fag and queer, and misgender Mike Obama?

I do. Did you hear Northam lost on the assault weapons ban in Va?

Yes, but my pea brain is having difficulty. Actually, I don't think I have to worry too much but 9 other states are going to be looking at instituting something similar. My site would have to meet at least 1 of the following....$25,000,000 in revenue or 50,000 users in Cali or 1/2 of my revenue would have to come from reselling my users information. I do not meet any of that criteria.

Q: How difficult would it be to add a "Download User Information" button that would download all of the users personal information to download folder? I don't collect anything except name, address, email, phone # and a shit ton of images. As of right now, I have no plans to sell this data.

Download "User Information" from where?
Do you mean from a web form they filled out, or to extract it somehow without their knowing?

I'm not an expert at this BUT isnt it pretty easy to work within this regulation?

Heres an example of what you guys are discussing : https://www.assurance.com/ccpa-opt-out

Seems easy no?

All my customers have a login. They enter their own information. The CCPA requires every Cali user to be able to demand to receive/see whatever information I have stored on my site/server. I want to add a "Download Your Information" button in their account so they can get it any time they like without having to contact me. It isn't very much information at all. Unless, that is, Cali has VERY broad interpretation of what user information is. Like every time they logged in, uploaded something etc.

They do upload lots of images but I do not keep them any longer than 6 months. About 70% of the images are deleted after 20 days.

All the information I have of my users are, of course, stored in a database. If I was to get a flood of requests, I would have to go in and find all the relevant information and then what? I would have to write it all down and snail mail or email it to them? Wouldn't it be much faster and better if I could simply code a way for it to be retrieved and downloaded to the requester's computer? Not only that but, it would be another way to touch my users? It is common among marketing experts that it takes 7 touches to keep a good relationship with your customers. I could code a pdf to download with a thank you letter with an added marketing message. I could turn it into a win.

What happens if you are not compliant? Isn’t internet free and unregulated?

Pretty sure you've already done the hard part = database.

If your prospect/client info is that organized, then yeah just code it out. Simple.

Are pixels and anonymous tracking mechanisms part of the regulated dataset? Pretty sure they just want to protect phone, email, and address type info. I wouldnt overthink it.

This does sound like an awesome wordpress plugin though.

Code the solution, then sell it at $97/month for every large CA sales business. Take that shit to every auto dealer, etc... in CA.

Ok, I'm in. I'll pay someone to do it. I'll take the first $100,000 and then hand over 50% after that.

Here's the kicker...every company in the entire US that does business business in Commiefornia has to comply.

I hate how California has all these extra requirements to do biz in their state, even if you are out of state. Same thing with the EU trying to make US businesses pay tax on eproducts and stuff. Insanity. Most of the online entrepreneurs I know just plan on ignoring these regulations are they are unenforceable. They would rather just pay a fine later if it came to that.

The CCPA has fines of $2500 - $7500 per user.

Yeah, companies will be forced to follow it or large TCPA type lawsuits will follow. TCPA has been on a lawsuit rampage last 2 years. CA probably saw $$$$$ and went w it.

I'm no legal scholar, but I don't think that would be enforceable. Not saying CA wouldn't come after you, but I thought there was a thread discussing this topic (here) and you could just move where you store the physical data out of the state? I have no interest in reading CA laws/policy as I don't live there, but I recall from another post and other articles that the work around was hosting the data in another state. I could be wrong so don't take this comment as legal advice.

I'm having trouble believing that there are enough WordPress users for something like this to be marketable.

WordPress' market share is 35% of all websites. According to W3Techs,WordPress powers 35% of all the websites on the Internet, including those without a content management system (CMS) or with a custom-coded CMS. Or to put it another way, WordPresspowers over one-third of the web!

No, No. Succinct and to the point would just be: "SUCK MY DICK."
