"Their reps also told me I 'shouldn't have packed such nice things' in my luggage to avoid this," she wrote.

Gonna have to agree with the reps on this one. Doesn't make it right stuff was stolen, but who the fuck travels with $4k worth of shit? The only thing I fly with that would be expensive is a golf bag or snowboard. And that's only about $600 in value for either.

Generally don't check a bag either. There's no reason you can't travel with just a backpack and carry-on roller bag. If you need more stuff, just ship it and avoid the fucking waiting game at the baggage carousel. You can actually ship clubs and ski/boards now and it's not that expensive, especially if you're flying an airline that charges for checked items. Saves time and the hassle of lugging around huge items at the airport. Plus you can even leave it at the resort or course and keep your hotel/accommodations less cluttered.

I love Southwest. Bags fly free! Cancel up to an hour before takeoff and get full amount of credit towards another flight. The boarding situation isn't so great, but that's about my only complaint.

Their website clearly shows what prices are available on what days.

I fly SW as my wife and I both have the companion pass. So the kids fly for free (minus 9/11 fees or international fees). The two bag thing is awesome, but we've found that we can pack into backpacks and one carry on roller for each person flying. Makes getting in and out of airports sometimes an hour or two faster round trip depending on time of year (spring break, thanksgiving, xmas, etc). Plus I hate baggage carousel bitch ass passengers that stand right up against the god damn thing and won't move so you can get your bag.

And yes, the low fare calendar is awesome as well. I know you can do it through other sites with multiple airlines as well, but once you learn some of the SW routes you know which fares are bullshit (multiple stops/weird hours). That's harder with Google flight for example. Sure I can get a $80RT flight from MDW to DEN through Spirit or Frontier, but then have to pay fucking $35 each way for a bag and another $15 each way to avoid a middle seat. And again, the times are shitty and probably multiple stops to get the lowest fare.

The new competition of Southwest-to-Hawaii led to some good United-package-deals for Hawaii vacations.

My partner and I recently took one of those. I was expecting the worst from this outfit whose employees sometimes seem to hate their customers and hate the company they choose to remain working for.

I must be honest, nothing negative or wrong happened, and employees were not rude.

Should've bought a lottery ticket!

UNITED was always fucking vile and looted their own people's pension fund making the crew nastier than ever but the fucking shithouse got fucking truly hostile and senescent after the Continental merger. Really stupid, really angry, really huge air staffs (chicks who look like Yetis) complimented by really angry, really stupid ground staffs who operate under the assumption that they'd just as soon shoot you in the fucking face as look at you. "FLY The FUCK-YOU! SKIES AND FUCKING DIE! at UNITED!"

The Continental merger def decreased the quality of the service and many planes need an interior overhaul. But they always have been recruiting many of their pilots from ex army /
airforce and thus prob still have the best pilots on average.

Unless you have some kind of elite status
(whatever the particular airline calls it) flying sucks. Have had difficulties with American, United and Southwest, I rarely fly Delta as they are not big in the markets I typically fly from and to. As to United I have seen some improvement in the last couple of years. Where as American seems to be going south. But passenger status level is getting less and less egalitarian every year, with basic economy people taking it in the shorts. And first and business class getting better.

I had a 730 Sunday United flight Denver to LA. After a trickle truth of incremental delays they finally boarded us at 10 minutes to midnight. Got back to town after the Metro shut down so I was stuck taking an expensive 2am taxi ride. At one point I went to the customer service counter and they gave a lame "Oh we're waiting for your plane it's on its way in from LA right now. " I could have totally done better things with that wasted time if they'd been more upfront about whatever situation makes a flight time just disappear like that.
