Why not Fraternal Orgs, Churches, Membership Societies, etc.?

Many of these offer Life, Auto, and other forms of Insurance, like the Sons of Norway or the AARP or AAA.

I know Christian groups have health sharing plans. But not many options for small biz other than Obama care.

Originally, companies offered "free" health insurance as an added employee benefit; companies needed to circumvent federal wage caps during world war 2.

Since then, companies can expense health care while individuals (until recently) could not, making corporate plans cheaper by the amount of a worker's income tax bracket. (north of 35% if you include California state income tax).

I suspect that the insurance pool for "workers" as opposed to "non-workers" is lower cost and lower risk, making corporate rates a bit lower than what consumers would face on their own.

Although it would initially be a hassle, I think it would be better overall for each individual buy their own insurance. It would reduce the complexity of evaluating a job offer, it would assure continuity of coverage when switching jobs, etc. If everyone were in the same boat as the non-employed, that insurance market would improve (well... hopefully).

My in laws were on one of those plans for a while until ObummerCare made it go extinct. Have to pay for the trans ops and abortions to be a qualified plan.

I can’t speak for now, but when I was a poker player, there were groups one could join as a pool and have health care. The kaiser version at the time was less than $1200 a year for someone under 30 years old albeit with high deductibles($50 for an office visit, I think it was $5k on hospitalization or surgical procedure before the insurance coverage would kick in)
