A Christmas advert from exercise bike company Peloton has been widely mocked on social media as being "sexist", "out of touch", and even "dystopian".

The ad, which has been viewed more than a million times on YouTube, sees a woman receive an exercise bike for Christmas from her husband.

She then records her workouts over the following year in a vlog and presents it to him as a way of saying thank you.

"A year ago, I didn't realise how much this would change me," she says.

The criticism knocked the company's shares, which closed more than 9% lower on Tuesday.

Peloton was not immediately available to comment after being contacted by the BBC.

Peloton sells fitness equipment - with bikes priced at more than $2,000 - fitted with touchscreens. Users then purchase a subscription to access classes streamed live and on-demand.

The New York-based company released the ad in November, but criticism on social media has increased markedly in recent days.

Some people complained it is sexist for a man to give his wife an exercise bike for Christmas, as it suggested he wanted her to lose weight.

Others noted that - despite claims the bike has "changed" her - the already slim actress who plays the main character looks exactly the same.

All I thought when I first saw that add was the chick was hot. I would buy this for my wife if it was 1/5th the price who doesn't like seeing a fine lady riding a bike?

I don't care what the stock movement does, the fat hogs complaining would never have sat on a Peloton, let alone purchase one.

Total nothing burger.

You mean the frame is not strong enough?

My wife asked for a bike like that. Left hates women who want to look great.

Probably, or at least a decreased life span.

I've seen this ad, it's pretty absurd that a woman in perfect shape would want to use a stationary bike so much.

For some people excercise becomes a form of addiction.

Left attempted extortion again. Business as usual.

Maybe it has removable seats and the husband plans to start a mail order seat sniffer business.

Yeah but that's common for most fitness ads, the point is you look good because of the work outs you do, it's meant for maintenance. While that woman is already absurdly thin (actually a bit too thin for my preference), I prefer seeing fit womyn over landwhale hogs in ads and commercials.

I have an elliptical and recumbant cycle, right in front of a flat screen telly in a bonus room. Hand weights and a mat for push-ups and sit-ups. I feel like shyte if I go long without exercise. Quit running, but there is nothing like it for that endorphin rush.

Yes, that does seem to be true.

Good looking women are a threat to women who don't look as good. Women compete for high-status men, so if one woman exercises and gets fit, that puts pressure on others to do the same if they want to get/keep that desirable man.

Unattractive women develop a resentment of being judged first of all on how they look, even though that is unalterably fundamental to human reproduction. Since the left is a collection of groups all driven by resentment, unattractive women naturally gravitate to the left.

Other resentments which drive the left:

- not being as successful as others
- not being white (even if white people treat them exactly as they would treat other white people, or even better)
- not being straight

The thing they all have in common is a resentment of straight rich white men. Like, say, Trump.
