Homelessness in San Jose

While you hear a lot about homelessness in Los Angeles and San Francisco, homeless encampments in San Jose California, are apparent a mere 5 blocks from where I live. In what is called the heart of Silicone Valley, a turn of phrase that always puzzled me when the giants of the tech industry, Hewlett/Packard, Steve Jobs, and Steve Wozniak, Apple, all came out of Palo Alto.

To understand the problem, I went to Mabury Street and interviewed Rachel Figuero on Sept. 8.

She is an older woman who has been living on the streets “Two and a half years” after her “mother passed away.”

After her husband died “…everything just kind of fell apart,” she said.

I asked her “What has the government done to help get you off the streets?”

AND she told me ABOUT “a survey,” which asked questions like, “were you ever the victim of violence on the street?” Do you feel your life is being threatened? Questions like that.

Figuero believes the answers were used to assign her certain percentage points that result in a score, they use to determine the need and eligibility of the homeless person.

In the California State Budget for 2019/20, “The Budget includes …$1 billion for homelessness.”

1 billion?  What were they doing with all that money?  Buying more of them?

To put that 1 billion number in perspective, California spends $3.5 billion on health care services for prisoners. Perhaps THAT would be preferable.

SEE 13th Street Pictures of homeless encampment, complete w/OVERLORD. One man in fine silk pajama bottoms sat a beauticians desk, and looked menacing. No one would speak to me, except Rachael.

They finally cleared out a large homeless encampment that was on frway 680 going south from Milpitas, in areas in between the large chain link freeway fence and neighborhood sound walls. I imagine the homeowner's weren't exactly tickled to hear homeless crap going on all night with drunken wailing and brawling just over the sound wall.

The areas still have some garbage and a bulldozer in there that leveled the area out. Seeing that encampment there just made me shake my head.

You should see what schools started teaching about lgbt and gender identity in CA. Parents worst nightmare.

Idiots on the left took over.

Stop calling bums and winos "homeless".

My Santa Cruz neighbor went on a trip to the south to learn about the whole de-segregation struggle and etc.

She said that the towns like Selma in Alabama and some in Mississippi were clean and free of bums and their ilk. She was really amazed at the contrast.

Santa Cruz is doomed; the University airhead students can vote locally and so we have super dimwit politicians running things.

Among places in the USA, Santa Cruz is maybe unique that you can qualify for food stamps and not have a physical address.

The insane attitude of the City Council is that we need to provide housing for the homeless.

The average homeless is variously: 1. on drugs 2. a drunk 3. a nut 4. an antisocial petty criminal 5. runaway young person

They can be a combination of various of the above.

California has no pride nor a backbone; it takes some balls to say "NO" to the various people begging for "help".

Not sure what you would do, or accomplish by just saying "no" or how that will solve the problem. We often reduce homeless people to a group of people will like to ignore, or pretend don't exist. They are somehow subhuman if they live outdoors.

Very unfortunate people, a growing population and one that will get in your face anyway, as much as you try to ignore them.

Stopping the policies attracting bums from all over the country into small enclaves would be a start.

They will kill you when their life depends on it because they are lacking alternatives. Republicans are constricting the resources as if they could kill off the homeless before the homeless kills off Republicans.

"Republicans"? In Santa Cruz? What are you smoking?

Absolutely! You can't have open borders and sanctuary cities, along with a socialist system. You will bankcrupt the nation.

Republicans have a program, and it is a new economy of for-profit prisons. These prisons have taken our unprecedented population of prisoners
I'm surprised you're not for a program where anyone with a 5-year or more sentence is just shot in the head instead. The USA could learn a lot from certain other countries!

I wonder how Switzerland is so low on FREEDOM! list. They vote for everything - seems that people deciding things as opposed to politicians should qualify as a lot of freedom.
