It's normal human nature to be offended by people saying the place you "belong" to should be taken over by someone else and if you don't like it you are wrong (racist, bigot, nationalist, etc.)
Imagine you were in a high school and there is a rival high school. After a couple of years of rivalry they decide that 1/2 of their students need to attend your school.
Would you like the teachers then telling you that the new kids were better and you should like them? Fuck no you would not.
It's also human nature to protect what is yours or perceive to be yours; my government doles out benefits which we pay for in taxes and someday I want to have some for myself. I am not happy that some asshole on a visa will import his parents from India or Mexico or China and they compete with me for those benefits.
Or, if I had children attending public schools, or other things like health care which we are now collectively subsidizing with Obamacare taxes, I would mind others sucking up those benefits.
