It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant Americans are about Mexicans; who they are and how they really think, and their deep down antipathy towards Americans.

Every time I am in Mexico visiting I see the scary behavior that is actually typical down there.

The interesting thing is they have the other end of the spectrum with some excessively nice people who are such a contrast.

The rate of violent crime in Mexico is vastly higher than in the USA. "Anyone who denies that is an idiot."

The difference with the USA crime is you know where it is concentrated; whichever place is the heaviest Obama voters, e.g. "inner city"=slums are places to be avoided.

Mexico is different; the place is lawless everywhere.

I feel sorry for my friends in Mexico because the decent people are outnumbered 2:1 by the loser "ninis"=(ni trabaja ni estudia=neither study nor work) who dominate the landscape and are looking for ways to get by illegally.

My Mexican friend knew a female who had an ex partner who was a murderer; he got out of jail and she was afraid. She asked how to get a gun in Mexico; the policeman told her "buy an illegal gun from a sympathetic policeman."

My last trip down I went along to a baptism party with my friend; his daughter's boyfriend had thrown a party for his baby niece. They had rented a space with a pool and a grill so someone made steak tacos, there was beer. The squealing kids stayed over at the pool so it wasn't too bad and there was no blaring shitty music.

My friend speaks English as does his daughter; she is an English teacher at a private school. We conversed a little bit in English.

A drunk female came over after an hour and had heard us speaking, and she proceeded to tell my friend what a bunch of assholes gringos are, we should all fuck off, etc. The odd thing is my friend was so polite to her he actually sat and engaged in conversation with the ignorant drunken bitch.

He later asked me what I had heard from her; I said "nothing; as a rule I tune out completely anything a fat ugly woman says to me." I had left to take a piss so I missed her ranting.

The point is she is the tip of the iceberg; there is no doubt that others had her feelings towards "gringos" but she was the one brave and drunk enough to express it.

That's the last large gathering I will be attending while in Mexico probably.

Americans who feel sorry for poor Mexicans are so beyond ignorant it really frightens me; if you were hurt in Mexico they'd rob you while you're rolling on the ground.

I don't think these people expected to be shot and killed either.....lol...and I'm not blaming anyone...i simply stated that traveling at 3am in mexico in a car is not a well thought out plan...I'd say its much riskier that traveling at 3pm...

Re: reasonable people may not stop for roadblocks in Mexico because gangsters use them and if you stop you will be dead also...at that point, both options are very high risk. Especially at 3am in an isolated area.

There aren't too many news outlets I'd trust to tell the truth in Mexico, so other than two people being executed, I have no idea what happened. What I do know is there is no vendetta against Americans. To the contrary we are their biggest drug buyers, and most frequent tourists, they want us there. But it's a failed state, so stuff like this can happen if you aren't careful. The killers could be anyone from state police, to cartels, but community police(citizens who are tired of corruption), are the last ones I'd suspect.

Not true. Auto defensas started as a backlash to government and cartel corruption. They can certainly be co-opted like any other movement, but they are the best hope for Mexico since the War on Us began.

Those who have lived in the USA mention feeling safe in the USA and unsafe in Mexico.

I guess one can easily distinguish the rag tag people putting up a roadblock are "community police" from the "community gangsters".

Most people I know here would not rob an injured Mexican; a lot of Mexicans would relish the opportunity to rob you.

I have an older Mexican friend who got amnesty and lives in LA; he was talking with his extended family one Christmas:

We have family in Tijuana, and still go down a few times a year. Haven't noticed things being better or worse than usual.

My limited experience in tourist areas in Mexico has been good. Mainly stayed at resorts admittedly, but did a few off site excursions. Never felt unsafe. People were kind but maybe that was my limited Spanish working to at least assimilate even as a tourist.

Outside of Islamic nations traveling with your wife or daughters, I think common sense rules the day in most foreign countries. Common sense also includes not traveling to the worst countries. I don't think Mexico comes close to making the top 30-40 of countries you shouldn't go to. Use your head and you'll be fine. Traveling at 3am even in the states is probably not a bright idea. You'd probably get killed in the US by a drunk driver before encountering a murderous road block in Mexico all things being equal.

When we traveled from SD to Ensenada by car we encountered every possible checkpoint: Marines, Federales, State Police, Municipal Police... Never "community police" though. Out of all these we met, only the Marines gave an impression of having some training under their belts. The rest did not demonstrate any muzzle/trigger discipline whatsoever.

Right on the ocean, that's the toll road. Not sure if they were still building it back then, but you won't find any of that now. Went to Ensenada twice in the past year, no checkpoints.

I think you should stay up north where it's "safe" and leave Mexico to the mexicans and the ex-pats that don't have that fear. I can say that I've never met a gringo down here that wasn't always complaining about something anyways. Always trying to make their mexico experience into a simulation of their life in the usa instead of changing their lives and becoming more like mexicans.
BTW, do you really feel "protected" by the police in the usa?

My rules for old white men surviving mexico in 2019....If you are a white dude that has money, try not to look like you have money...don't drive a nice new vehicle...ride a bus... dont wear jewelry or expensive clothes. Keep your mouth shut and don't draw more attention to yourself than need be. Don't travel after dark. If this fool was in a bus or an old mexican taxi, my bet is that none of this would have happened.

So it needs to be a Mexican taxi or a Mexican bus, right? I’ve used both when in Mexico, exclusively because I never wanted to bring a vehicle of my own there. Just seemed like too many ways that could go wrong. So it’s a taxi to Rosarito even though that is kind of spendy and the taxi is a 30 year old station wagon. And it’s a bus to downtown Cabo from the hotel. Just a few pesos and then ride with all the common people. It works, and it’s safe.

There are lots of mexican fools in their 2019 custom trucks and gold chains who get jacked and killed....Being a fool has no racial boundries. That being said, I'm not sure what your point is. Things are not going to change drastically down here. It seems that you just want to argue. If you want to come down here, be aware that you are on your own. That's all I'm saying. Yup. Sounds like they were targeted. With the "2nd wife" living down there full time it was likely that people knew she hooked up with a gringo if he was splitting time down there. I'd find it hard to believe that the killers didn't know who they were. And the 3am thing is still fishy.

Although maybe the definition of roadblock has changed from when I learned it in elementary school.
