The Long and Lucrative Mirage of the Driverless Car

For years, Silicon Valley giants and Detroit automakers alike have sold the public visions of a utopia featuring autonomous vehicles. That reality is still far off, but that hasn’t stopped companies from cashing in on repeated promises that suggest otherwise.

As soon as they are manufactured and on the road at scale, the reports of sniper attacks and freefire fights on highways will be coming in by the millions per hour.

I'm putting cannon mounts on my autonomous vehicle.

If Elon Musk was from and in China, they would have gave him the Death penalty by now. How many people has his menace machine killed now, during normal operation?

The Chinese don't play that, that's one thing I will say about them. They are heavily regulated over shit like this. And it doesn't mater how rich, powerful or big you are. If you build a building and it collapses on someone. You will get the death penalty.

I’m not sure, but during that same time how many people have internal combustion engines operated by idiots killed? It’s got to be close to half a million. And you’re worried about the five or six killed by Tesla malfunctions?

This reminds me of the endless debates rednecks used to have about whether to wear seatbelts. They’d claim that the chance of being trapped in a burning or sinking car by a seatbelt meant they’d be better off without it. Statistics be damned! I ain’t wearing that death strap!
(As I fly right out the windshield and then get run over by oncoming traffic)

I still trust driverless cars more than about 50% of the population behind the wheel. Atleast you got a video camera from all angles detailing exactly what happened.... so there can't be any hit and runs.. and accountability can be determined much easier.

It's a very old fantasy. Goes back to the 50s, when Radio Direction and Traffic Controllers were proposed.
