There’s been a strategic breakthrough on the front lines of the American bike wars: This week, the Boston suburb of Cambridge mandated that protected cycling lanes be installed on all streets that are slated for reconstruction under existing city plans.

Passed by the city council on April 8, the ordinance appears to be the first of its kind in the U.S., and allows Cambridge—a dense university town that already has an unusually high share of bike commuters—to ascend into the ranks of the most progressive bicycling cities in the country. Local law now requires the city to erect vertical barriers between cyclists and cars on any roadway that’s rebuilt, expanded, or reconfigured under the Cambridge Bicycle Plan, a proposed 20-mile network of separated lanes, or the city’s five-year street and sidewalk plan. Only in “rare circumstances” where the city manager must cite physical or financial restraints will there be exceptions.

This is a very good thing. Expect it to be opposed by treasonous interests which want to force us all to drive everywhere, in order to keep sending US dollars to the murderous Saudis.

Bike infrastructure is also a bargain. When you measure people moved per dollar spent, even in a climate like Massachusetts where you're going to get low utilization in the winter, it easily pays for itself in vehicle traffic reduction during other seasons. Even for road users who never intend to bike, every bike you see using protected infrastructure is one car fewer that you're stuck behind in traffic.

Bike infrastructure shouldn't be a politicized topic: it is fiscally conservative and simultaneously provides liberal choice of mode.

I was born there and it's called the People's Republic of Cambridge

Fortunately, my parents moved out by the age of 8, otherwise, I'd be an alumni with the Boston bomber.

The problem is that vast amounts of money are made in building roads for cars, selling cars, and sending money to Saudi Barbaria and similar places for oil to run those cars.

We have a democracy in name only. In reality, business interests run the US for the most part.

I read this book and have no argument with it:

When you drive by Ralston Ave exit on 101 take a look at the dedicated bicycle bridge built parallel to an existing highway overpass and mere feet away from it. That thing cost $6M, IIRC.

On average day maybe 5 bikes per hour passes through it (I'm being generous here).

That is surprising. The area I live in here in VA is building bike paths region wide. No shortage of use here. When I lived in Sacramento decades ago, there were bike paths everywhere and along the American River. They seemed to always be in use. Maybe today's Californian is less active and more into screens.
