Article didn't tell me how many of these teachers are Republican Socialist union members that are turning down additional taxpayer dollars.

"Honk for higher taxes, and more and more ESL students". I doubt that the school board and teachers union will turn down another effort to raise taxes for public schools.

What I don't understand is that nearly 20 years ago, Los Angeles was touted as one of the best schools systems for many factors or metrics like class size, test scores, etc.

The LA Times article in February 2019 says the conditions at LA County Public Schools is poor.

California used to be a solidly Republican Red state too.

Amazing what happens when you drastically change the demographics of this state with uneducated people from the 3rd world needing handouts.

How long can they go without brainwashing, gold stars, and free lunches?

I mean the teachers. The students do OK with mugging, pimping and drug sales.

Can’t they just arm all of the students and teachers for high stakes dodge ball?

ESL and unlimited immigration is a Jobs program for immigrants.

It's funny how snobby liberal enclaves want illegals to go to school in the working class neighborhoods, but people people through the ringer on the least suspicion they are faking their address in THEIR kid's school district.

Retirement medical is spending that is not in the classroom. Same as with underfunded pension liabilities. The high cost of living is driving out all but childless hipsters, so declining enrollment and so declining funding.

It is a Death Spiral.

I wonder where Marcus would weigh in on this.
10   RC2006   2019 Mar 20, 6:00pm

The decline and how many illegals that have flooded LA wave after wave is insane. The schools my parents and grandparents went to would be a minimum multiple beatings or death sentence by gangs now for my kids. My elementary school had next to no esl when I was a kid and was 60% white now it's 99% hispanic and has falling scores, lot of ESL. It's really sad when you witness it first hand, my kids couldn't even grow up, play, and go to school were I went.

California already has a high income tax.

And now they are going to increase property taxes about 7% on Los Angeles County (https://www.latimes.com/local/education/la-me-edu-lausd-parcel-tax-20190228-story.html?fbclid=IwAR1mQJsQXjS0fpY2d8QSh5UYr0CspH8NUS44ZMnIsaLf0xiyeTEMo98BAaM).

Let alone Governor Jerry Brown increases taxes.

Tax revenue is not keeping up, even though they raised taxes, with the costs.

So what do you mean about "retirement medical" ? You mean like police and firemen faking injuries and retiring early ?

Yeah, where is Iwog, Marcus, and Jazz Music to discuss this ?
12   B.A.C.A.H.   2019 Mar 20, 6:37pm

No, I mean retirement medical for school district retirees (and their spouses, etc). And their underfunded pension liabilities the school districts are also on the hook for. This is money spent by districts that is not being spent in the classroom.

Why would anyone want to spend it in the classroom? The object of socialist bureaucracy is to grow itself and feed on ever increasing tax pools while bailing out of the actual job they were set up to do. That way, they can keep saying they don't have enough money to do the job and they need more.

It's the sacred socialist "Don't do the job so you can keep getting more money to do the job" meme.

Ceff,

did you spend any time in a public K-12 classroom? Just asking.

Burned up most of my vacation time for 21 years volunteering at my kids' public K-12 till the youngest finished in recent years.

Lots of good stuff going on in those classrooms and after school. Some bad stuff you mention, but lots of good stuff, too.

My kids and many others extracted every bit of benefit from the California Taxpayer. And this would be in schools that some here would call "shitty".

I mention this example because Mathematics is not political curriculum: My kids, and most others of their classmates from the "shitty" school attained the highest possible scores in both first and second year AP calculus ("5"). One of my kids went straight into upper division mathematics in college before even turning 18. And there's scores of other kids of all ethnicities who did the same. And this is from a "shitty" school with a "shitty" demographic which means No Rich Tiger Parents paid for private tutoring. Just lots of (unpaid) afterschool tutoring from a dedicated civil servant teacher and her volunteer helpers.

It's a problem when school district money is allocated away from instruction ("the classroom") when it's diverted to retiree (and their family members) medical and underfunded pension liabilities.

Okay, so this is about probably one of the most largest problems the USA is internally facing besides an open border and an oversupply of poor Central American immigrants.

"retirement medical" means healthcare insurance covered by the school system for the school system retirees before they are of medicare age ?

Yes, that is the same for the military. Look at military pensions and medical care for veterans and retirees. The military is modernizing and using automation. Its not growing in size, just evidenced by the number of crewmembers onboard a new ship or submarine. The US military is using technology to make up for the demands on not increasing its work force size while still maintaining its force readiness.

California, New York, etc. should do the same and only replace 10 retirees with no more than 7 new hires. Attrition is one way to keep the state and local government costs down. Don't increase the number of civil servants.

Unfortunately the pensions, already underfunded, cannot Print Money, and so are kind of like Ponzi schemes. Growth can Paper Over Ponzi Finance. Reducing contributions by reducing headcount will exacerbate the problem. The better approach would be to cash out folks and switch to a 401. But, we know who would howl and say that would "hurt our children".

Okay BACAH, this is a budget problem as retirement costs are starting to take a toll. I think Illinois and Connecticut are the first two states that are showing the strain of this.

Really this is a productivity matter as far as the ratio of performance and delivery of services versus the costs. The costs are being driven up by those that are retirees, and the vast majority of the replacement "workforce age people" are poor and undocumented immigrants mostly from Central America. I think that is why Los Angeles is undergoing so much strain as far as tax revenues for schools versus school costs.

Like I said, they have to innovate so that 10 retirees only get replaced with no more than 7 new hires. The military is doing this to some extent with drones, automated ships, etc.

I just read an article that pretty much as a "fuck you to the smug white liberals" who warn about paying $20 for a strawberry if we don't have open borders. The article talks about automation of agriculture such as the planting and harvesting of strawberries, apples, etc.

I would imagine that Piedmont is now a Tiger Mom school, given that the area is now very expensive.

That reads like gentrification, Asian-American style. That same "tiger mom" will reliably vote Democrat but will "work the back channels" as necessary to protect her zip code's average property value and school system image.

Yeah, I just found info on Piedmont : https://www.greatschools.org/california/san-jose/5463-Piedmont-Hills-High-School/#Race_ethnicity

And yes, it looks like Piedmont seriously caught the Asian flu.

62% of student body is Asian. And maybe not so coincidentally, its overall rating is 9 out of 10 with a 10 out of 10 for standardized test scores.

61% of the student body passed the math standardized tests. I wonder if all of the 61% are the Asian students.
21   AD   2019 Mar 20, 8:30pm

@Ceffer,

I'd love to see a plot of % of Asian students versus the California public school overall rating. The same I'd like to see for hispanics/latinos in California.
22   Ceffer   2019 Mar 20, 8:39pm

I pass schools in Santa Cruz all the time and clearly vast majority illegals of various stripes. The illegals are just part of the Educational Growth Industrial Complex to keep the public schools fat, sassy and pretending they are doing something for ever increasing funding.

Less and less and less for more, more, more money, it's the "inverse tax hole" system of government growth.
23   B.A.C.A.H.   2019 Mar 20, 8:44pm

My kids went to one of those ESUHSD but not Piedmont. It's true, it's the presence of those Asian kids that pulls up the school performance. But, because the school must offer challenging stuff to the kids of the Tiger Parents, those opportunities are there for the kids of other races, too. And some of them non-Chindian, even many of them, take advantage of those opportunities.

Another thing, there's a lot of diversity in "Asian", it includes Vietnamese, many of those are not Rich Asians. I reckon Vietnamese + Filipino likely outnumber Chindian in the Piedmont enrollment area. That's what I observe when out and about in Berryessa.

What you saw three or so decades ago as a student in Cupertino, or grading your dad's papers from Piedmont, I dunno, Ceff. Not the same thing as spending boots on the ground as a parent volunteer for two decades. If you did that, you might see some good things going on, not all the bad you point out.

I don't think it's all bad. Just a lot bad, and not value for dollar on the taxpayer's money aka. the taxpayer's who actually pay the taxes. I'm sure selected schools still offer a good experience.

My public high school had a French teacher who was a knockout, and by reputation at the time, educated some of the male students above and beyond the call of duty, so that has been going on forever, too.

Nah, don't encourage him to be optimistic on this board.

I enjoy all the Ceffer, Patrick, et al. perspectives that the Marcus types try to ignore as the inconvenient truth.

Besides that most of the truth clouds or overwhelms all the sparse optimistic observations anyway.

I think even the non-Chinese and Indian (i.e., Chindian) Asian students like the Phillipinos, Cambodians, and Vietnamese students are motivated and do a lot better on math tests than their hispanic/latino counterparts in California public schools.
