...is sports. Tell me how I'm wrong. At least where moral meritocracy is concerned.

You’re wrong.
The only sports a poor disadvantaged kid could excel at without help from a parent are basketball and football. And that’s if someone paid their school activity fee and bought them shoes.

Baseball wouldn’t be too bad except that kids with dads who practice with them do much better than other kids.

The rest of them mostly cost too much, especially hockey, golf, tennis, skiing, rowing, etc etc etc.

Most of the sports are still dependent on money and parents with money or time/desire to get involved.

Would it be more true if I said college level and up sports?

Is that why H1Bs are all the rage?

I did say Know your Shit.

Just because someone went to school for Software or IT but really didn't have the aptitude for it, they don't have hardware and software lab and sandboxes at home to develop in. You're probably not going to be a strong candidate.
Also the Market matters. Those quality H1B candidates are whores as well. They are not going to work for ACME Widget Factory, they came here for the Alphabet and Facebook money. They only work for big name Companies. They suck at Enterprise development. Even though they are Sales Force and some of the bigger Cloud based ERP systems. They are even shittier Enterprise integrators, than they are Enterprise developers. They make an unusable kludge out those Custom integrations. Regardless how well they scored on the Sales Force and SAP tests.

I'm not knocking how they do other types of software development, working with other data model types.

You sound very knowledgeable on this topic. Can you tell me the difference between Enterprise integrators and Enterprise developers?

I would have thought they would be worse developers than integrators. I assume developers meaning creating from scratch.

I am currently creating a company and the sole product is best described as saas. My developer is overseas.

Maybe music. A few poor folks have managed to become Country stars over the years. Managed to find a banjo or guitar somewhere. Same with some Pop stars.

While I'm quite certain Indian developers would be the team you want to actually write and create the code that makes up Sales Force or a SAP ERP systems.

The Integration is when Developers(More like end users) then uses those Software suites to customize it to fit to a particular company's business vertical.
The problem is no two businesses actually do business the same way. There's an art to know how to provide Enterprise solutions for a company. You don't learn that in Computer Science Classes. Well they do teach requirement gathering. But if you're not careful it turns into a Democracy and the dumbest ideas end up winning, if you don't have the experience to tell them upfront the detrimental problems to going down that path. So actually using Sales Force to fit the business requirements is integration.

Where as I come from a roll your own background of way back when Fox Pro or Visual Basic was the path from Excel, Access and Quickbook to being a robust Enterprise Management for your business. You would gather the business requirements and write software accordingly for their needs. This has many advantages, as you don't have to pay yearly licenses for the use of a out of the Box solution. Also you don't have 100's of database tables that don't relate to your industry or business model. Another upside to this model is scalability when business needs grow, it's much easier to plug in the new requirements.

Using box ERP systems, usually you are trapped to configuration of the ERP itself and or how the person that did your integration set the system up.
Many times I've seen at this company twice already. When the company hits that wall. They abandon that system and go with a new ERP or CRM system.
As the previous one had so many custom fields and custom scripts that will no longer be relevant, but still caused inherent bugs and behaviors.

No it’s even worse at college level.
1)sports scholarships can’t cover living expenses so the poor athlete will need to take out loans to live (cuz they aren’t going to have time for a job). Coaches sometimes find a way to gift a promising athlete some money through a donor or something but the NCAA is good at fishing this stuff out and will suspend an entire football program for this type of stuff.
2)athletes tend to be dumb, not really college material. So requiring that they pass a bunch of classes with a C or better while participating in a demanding sports curriculum isn’t really fair to their tiny brains. This will affect poor and minority athletes the worst as simple statistics can show, most wash out of such programs within a year. These athletes will never make it to the big leagues, not for lack of athletic ability, but for lack of scholarship.

I still do that with VB. Not as qualified as you, however. I hate that Microsoft did a totally capricious and evil act by limiting Access files size. Odd move for a database program, and it forces you into SQL Server. Maybe no big deal for you, but boofs the guy who writes a simpler program that happens to collect lots of records.

Well if you like the Click through solutions that gets you up and running with minimal code.
Download the Free Visual Studio, check out Entity Framework. It will create all of the connection classes to your database and then you can even create point and click MVC data entry forms with full CRUD(Create, Read, Update, Delete) functionality. All without writing one single line of code. You could literally do all that in 15 minutes.
There is even a flavor for MySQL which doesn't have size limitation, like the free MS SQL does.

https://dev.mysql.com/doc/connector-net/en/connector-net-entityframework-core-example.html

You can then peek under the hood and get an idea how it all works and customize it further if you have the need.
I must say, from not knowing nothing the first time I clicked through Access to create a database. I would say the method I described above probably less complicated.
Even if you do need two tiers to work with. The Database then the Web site running your MVC.

If you don't like or want a web based solution.

Do a Windows form and it has pretty much the same point and click concepts.

So actua...

My developer is of the Indian persuasion. It is going well. Slow, but well. At some point, I want to switch to an American developer. Someone I can actually sit down with and have a face to face conversation with. What is the best way for me to find and test a new developer?
16   Tenpoundbass   2018 Dec 28, 12:31pm

What is your business vertical?
What kind of data processing is required?
Will you interface with trading partners or vendors?
Will it have to be Sarbanes-Oxley Compliant?

I would focus in on those requirements, and put in the ad, this is not for your open source Social Media developer, or Phone App developer.
I would probably say old school VB Custom Business programmer that hasn't had a hit in a while. Here's the job for you.

Any developer worth their salt, should be able to make you a quick ap that does just one of your smaller requirements.
Just to show you how their thought process works and if they are in line with what you are trying to do.
I like those request much better than taking some aptitude coding test. As people have different codding styles those coding tests make sure everyone is the same cookie cutter quality. But not better than the Indians they make money from in their outsourcing operation. It's part of the reason companies appear that they can't find good programmers.
