Democrat Andrew Gillum rode a surge of liberal support from young people and African Americans to a stunning primary victory Tuesday and the historic opportunity to be the first black governor in Florida’s history.

With 94 percent of the votes counted, Gillum had an unofficial 3 percentage point lead over his closest rival, former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham. Gillum overwhelmed Graham in Miami-Dade and Broward, the state’s two largest Democratic counties, by more than a 2-to-1 margin, in the highest turnout for a midterm primary election in Florida history.

“I am overwhelmed,” Gillum told a cheering crowd of supporters at a victory party at Hotel Duval in downtown Tallahassee. “I want you to know that this thing is not about me. This race is about every single one of us. Those of us inside this room. Those outside of this room. Those who voted for me. Those who didn’t vote at all. And those who didn’t vote for me because they are Republicans. But I want to be their governor, too.”

Running to the left of his rivals and despite being vastly outspent, the charismatic and proudly liberal Gillum built a devoted statewide following of progressives. He had a well-received message of social justice and lifting up the downtrodden and an appeal to Florida’s growing diversity.

This is actually bad for Democrats; the Progressive Wing nominated an underfunded, furthest Left candidate to run for Governor. That could mean the moderate and neoliberal Democrats didn't show up to the primaries, but the crazy base was fired up. That's not good for the General Election; he's too far left for Dem moderates.

This is like the Paleban that California Dems put up against Hunter. Hunter would be far more vulnerable to a MOR Democrat given his current fundraising issues. But if the choice is between a Young Yassr Arafat and Hunter, Hunter is safe.

I'm very interested to see how Dems turn out for candidates like Ocasio Cortez and Gillum.

If turnout is low, then I'll admit moderate dems actually still exists.

But if turnout is high for these type of candidates and they actually take office, dem can't claim the party hasn't become radicalized under the veil of socialism.

Interetsing also in AZ McSally the moderate won handily.

Dems playbook is to sell socialist crap to naive kids in college. Then get them to go out and vote for socialism.

Creates voters with 0 life experience to vote on things they don’t understand.

Being that FL is a kinda swing state, I looked at the actual votes counts on all the Gov primaries, not just the Dem side.

Gillum received 518K votes to win on the Dem side
DeSantis (the Repub) received 914K to win on the Repub side.

What do you make of that? Granted, there were 4 running on the Dem side and only 2 on the Repub side, but in overall total voted by party, more Repubs came out to vote then Dems.

If the Moderate won it's something to worry about. But Gillum edging out the moderate Democrat is troubling for the Dems. Gillum was also the mayor of the State Capitol, which is perceived as full of Government Workers and very Big Government.

I heard the Republicans had more voters in the primary, which doesn't signal an enthusiasm gap. Haven't checked the numbers personally yet.

This morning my wife switched on public radio. They were talking about Trump's trade deal with Mexico. First, a trade union boss came on and was positively orgasmic about the deal, leaving journalists somewhat uneasy as it does not fit usual "Trump is a monster" narrative. I do not remember which trade union he represented, but Public radio employees are in that union. Second, a D politician from one of rust-belt states came on and also praised the deal.

One can take a guess who wins Ohio, PA, MI, WI in next presidential elections. And it will be interesting to see how this influences midterms.

Democrats must be worried AF about this election. They already started attacking DeSantis for an unwise comment he made about “monkeying this up.”

I was watching Bloomberg earlier, and they were stating it's the battle of the extremes in Florida. The far Left (Gillum) versus the far Right (DeSantis, because he was supported by Trump)...

The TDS will never rest.
