Buying a home overseas is not only for the wealthy. In some cases, living abroad is cheaper than living in the United States.

The U.S. government doesn’t compile official data on how many Americans reside overseas but the State Department estimates 9 million live abroad (a number that does not include military personnel serving in the armed forces). It’s a good bet not all of them have seven-figure bank accounts.

If you are considering a move abroad, cost can be a key factor when it comes to where you reside. With the help of International Living, we’ve put together a list of 10 places around the globe where many Americans can afford to live comfortably. These are not the cheapest places to live but they are locations that offer good value.

Every site thinks they can put up a pay wall. I'll be damned if I'll pay a website for watered down, distorted facts news, I read weeks ago on 4Chan Patnet or Gab.

Ah, you mean the anti ad-blocker thing?

In Opera and Chrome, and some other browsers, you can select the item which is blocking your view by right-clicking and selecting "Inspect Element" and then delete it by selecting delete from drop-down menu.

Then to re-enable the scroll bars, go to the console in the developer tools and enter this:

document.documentElement.style.overflow='scroll';

Then paywall gone! It's a little bit of work, but once you get the hang of the browser's development tools, you can get around lots of paywalls that way.

Most of those places in the article are Spanish-speaking.

Probably the author speaks Spanish. Anyway, pretty easy language as learning languages go.

Unlike, say, California.

Most of those places are places where International Living is running seminars about or has other financial ties to promoting. Not that some aren't good places to retire, but IL makes its living at promoting places to expat to that they make money on. Take what they say with a really big grain of salt. There is a lot of misinformation they send out also.

I wonder how it fares if you become old, disabled and unable to manage finances etc-there is no medicare in those countries?

You get an international health care policy or qualify for residence.

How does medicare take care of being disabled and unable to manage finances? Is there a new medicare part x or something that I don't know about yet?

I have studied this subject a little bit. I am bilingual in Spanish and have lived and worked in Baja Mexico decades ago.

Re: the list from International Living. 1. Malaysia I would reject for several reasons; severe culture shock, Muslim country, very long plane ride back to the USA
2. Riviera Maya Mexico: Foreigners may not actually own directly property in certain parts of Mexico, article #27 of the constitution prohibits it. But you can have a trust buy the house and you are the beneficiary of the trust and can control it.

The biggest problem in some places is medical services are far below what we have in the USA. I consider my time between taking social security and when I start really slowing down as my possible overseas period.

Does Medicare cover you, if you live outside the country? For now, I only trust USA and Western Europe for full health coverage.

Since you travel outside, you oughta know the difference. In the USA you get care no matter what, in many third world countries or similar you pay you get care. Especially expats.

Of course not. But you can get an international policy no problem and they don't cost a lot. Less than medicare depending on your situation.

So stay in the states, no one is forcing you to move anywhere.

Depending on the situation you can be on medicare/Medicaid and can have a person who oversees your medical decisions for you. Medicare will grab your assets of course if you go into long term care. I think there is a time limit before which you can transfer assets to kids, but after that daddy takes them over if you end up in long term care.

Third world countries are fine as long as you are healthy, once you get disabled, most don't even have handicapped access outside in public areas. You may buy polciies etc ,but many of these people, you need to "know" people. There is still a personal touch. if you fall and blank out, no private hospital will touch you unless you pay and it gets very complicated. Public hospitals are crap though may be cheap. As long a syou have your faculties or a trusted person who will help after, you should be fine.
