A California state assemblyman running for governor called for the arrest and federal indictment of the state attorney general after the official threatened prosecution against any business owner complying with a federal immigration law.

Assemblyman Travis Allen (R-Huntington Beach) said President Donald Trump and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions should "come to California [and] literally arrest [and] indict Xavier Becerra for breaking federal law."

Tucker Carlson agreed with Allen who said Becerra, the state's top law enforcement officer, broke federal law by threatening employers with prosecution if they violated sanctuary city policies.

The act was sponsored by State Assemblyman David Chiu (D-San Francisco).

Carlson said that by Becerra - a state official - flouting federal law in this way, it makes people wonder "if the union begins to fall apart" next.

"The [state] attorney general is literally, criminally trying to obstruct justice," Allen said.

"[Xavier Becerra] has crossed the line," he said. "This is now a criminal offense."

Allen faces a slew of Democrats, including Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, in the race for governor.

Governor Jerry Brown (D) is term-limited.
