Jamaica remains safe for visitors, according to the island’s tourism minister.

Edmund Bartlett was responding to the Foreign Office warning to British tourists in the Montego Bay area, urging them to remain within gated, guarded compounds except on hotel-operated excursions or airport transfers.

The UK’s new travel advice followed the declaration of a “State of Public Emergency” in the parish of St James, which includes Montego Bay.

The Jamaica Defence Force has moved in against organised crime to quell an upsurge in violence, fuelled by fighting over drugs, illegal weapons and lottery scams that target elderly people in the US.

Tourists in Jamaica told ‘stay in hotels’ amid state of emergency

Mr Bartlett said: “These enhanced security measures are not out of the ordinary in international tourism markets and therefore would be understood by visitors and welcomed by residents.

“All members of the tourism fraternity have given their full support to the measure and are feeling that these actions are welcome to ensure the safety of Jamaica’s guests and citizens.”

He appeared to contradict the advice from the UK for holidaymakers to stay in their hotels by saying: “There is no need to modify movements as restrictions in the stated areas should not adversely impact law abiding persons.”

A record number of tourists visited Jamaica in 2017: 4.3 million, of whom around 200,000 are from Britain. Official figures assert that one in 10,000 visitors suffers a crime; that indicates around 20 UK tourists last year fell victim.

Why bother going to Jamaica when we have Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, and South Central LA. All high crime neighborhoods look the same to me.

Is it racist to tell the truth about black violence?

Really?

As to why anyone would choose to vacation in a shithole country is beyond me.

We are literally going to the shithole Haiti on a cruise in April. The Royal Caribbean Allure. We wanted to experience one of the largest ships ever built, and we didn't have much choice but to accept this particular date.
I don't mind. It makes me appreciate America even more.

I really do appreciate the engineering marvel of some of these ships. That said. Smaller cruise ships are substantially more enjoyable. Don't mistake this as me saying you won't have fun. You will.

Big ships blow though. I'm a 2,200 PAX or less cruiser moving forward. Just remember that double occupancy is just that. Throw in a bunch of family types and a double occupancy capacity of say 4,200 turns into 5,200 real quick with a bunch of kids. Hopefully it's mid or late April, if not, good luck on your spring break hell.

My wife tends to get sea sick on the regular ships. So we decided to give this one a try. I assume bigger ships are more steady.
It sails April 8 actually. We will be in Florida a few days earlier. I love nature, and want to experience the Everglades some more.

Sorry, passenger. 2,200 passenger ship. I've seen the "lingo" before and just used it here. BS lingo aside, I prefer smaller cruise ships having sailed on 4 occasions to date. That's what I was getting at.

If you leave the 8th, you should be fine. Still might be a spring break for a few districts, but you should be MUCH better than the week (or 2-3) prior.

I've only done the big boy boat once (Norwegian Escape - 4,200 PAX double occupancy, but was 5,400 PAX on our spring break cruise 2017 with all the kiddos). It was fun, but too many god damn people. I don't get sea sick so I can't speak to it, but if you're not centered on the boat, physics will tell you there's going to be a whole lot of rocking at the front or back of these mega ships. Think of it as a see saw if you catch my drift. These mega ships are longer and the dip and rise of the waves is that much more dramatic at the rear and front.

Have the wife get loaded up on whatever remedies she can for sea sickness. Any side effects from that stuff is negligible compared to actually getting sea sick. I've yet to hear anyone counter this on a ship, but alcohol is actually one of the best sea sickness antidotes. The thing is, you need to be steady throughout your at sea days. You need to immediately have a mimosa upon waking up. So either have a bottle of bubbly in the room or be ready to go to the bar.

From there, be ready for another mimosa by about 10-11am. This strategy only works if you're able to handle your booze throughout the day. Or you're an alcoholic. The key is mentally disconnecting yourself from the boats movement. You need to stay in a constant state of being buzzed. This has always worked for me on a cruise. I'll usually have 3 mimosas in the morning the first day or two. By the remainder of the cruise I'll just get beer at 8am and say who fucking cares.

If the wife doesn't dig the booze, go back to stage one and get the meds. Cruises are our white trash emblem, but we need to wear it and recognize that cruising is a fucking blast if you're with good people.

Love the information. Thank You.
We are in mid ship, hopefully she will be fine. She doesn't drink, but no worries, I can drink for 2, but only in the evenings. I might sneak in a mimosa or two at lunch though. :)
