Yes.
Seems to work ok. Let me know if you have any trouble logging out and in again.
Game changer...nice.
Now we gotta attract new voices to the conversation. Have you thought about adding a link to auto-tweet or auto-post a comment to social media w a link to the thread? If someone is particularly happy w their own grandstanding, their FB friends may join in after he shares it.
Just a thought
How is this easier? People use anonymous emails for this sort of forum. They're not necessarily the sort of accounts people keep on Outlook or whatever. I now have to log on to my email account before accessing the site. It was easier with the password.

Why not just remain logged in all the time? That's what I normally do.
Not wanting to cause any trouble, just trying to figure out your use case.

I don't see anyone else who stayed logged in all the time previously...

Online now and logged in are two different things.

@CBOEtrader (btw, I own CBOE stock and it's done great) I totally agree we need new voices.
I guess I should do that, though I am wary of dependencies on FB etc. Even including anything from them in my site worries me. If you include their javascript, they can shut down your site at any time. Any 3rd party js gives that 3rd party complete control.
But OK, let's try it. I added the FB share button after the email share link.

Yes, the "online now" is just an indicator of any kind of site activity by a logged in user in the last 5 minutes. Even reloading the home page when logged in will pop your username up there.
OK. I guess it's just me who has a habit of logging off from sites, so for me, it was easier before.
This worked for a long time. I actually never even bothered to set a password.
How about the option for both types of login?
That's how it used to be, but people got confused. So I'd say, just "reset password" via email and it will log you in as well.
After a while I thought, hell, why use passwords at all if "reset password" log in works just fine?
I guess I can live with this. My preference however is the way it was before.
I prefer the old-fashioned password way, too. Why is this easier or otherwise better on your side, Patrick?
It's better for me for a couple of reasons.
* I don't have to explain that there are two ways to log in, via a password reset link or via a password. Some users were confused. Now there is just one way.
* I hate typing passwords on a phone. It's just tedious. Easier to click.
* The code is simpler with fewer paths (no password recovery path anymore, no entry of password or checking of it).
* There is no need to worry about passwords getting stolen anymore.
* People are more likely to use a live email address instead of a burner, and so more likely to get notified of likes, etc, which draws them back in.
* I used to have the problem of remembering my password, or failing that, logging in via the password reset link on my phone, but then that would log me out of my laptop since the password was now different. Now logging in to one via email does not affect being logged in to another device, since the password does not actually get reset.
no, but it sounded funny...
rando says
Lol, you have 22 separate accounts on here?
@jvolstad I made the login link permanent-ish.
So now you can simply bookmark the login link after logging in and use that rather than do the round trip to your email program.
That simplifies things yet more, but it makes that login link kind of dangerous. Anyone who gets it can become you instantly.
I'll also create a profile option to reset the login link and log out of all computers.
@jvolstad Also, now you can get your key from off your https://patrick.net/profile.php page and use that like a password to log in in the upper right "key" box that shows when logged out.
What kind of idiots would be on patnet?
A cornucopia of idiots from all walks of life which is why patrick should create his own polls and have us vote and compare the numbers to the msm polls.
yes, poll are a good idea.
how to implement? what should it look like to create a poll, or to use one?
Polls would be a complete waste of time on this forum. There's virtually no middle ground remaining on here.
Now you simply enter your email address on the login page, click the button, and get an email.
When you click the login link in the email, it logs you in.
Let me know if any trouble. This should be easier all around, but maybe I haven't entirely thought it through.
(Update on 21 March: You can also use the key from your https://patrick.net/profile.php page to log in now. Careful though, if anyone gets that key, they can become you very easily.)
