I write about Coalinga, California. I was born in Oakland, but was adopted and carlifted to Coalinga when I was just 3 months old. So, I am looking for ideas on how to fix rural America, something Donald Trump campaigned on. If you guys have ideas I want to hear them: http://www.talkmarkets.com/content/economics--politics/trump-cannot-easily-fix-rural-america-heres-why?post=115383&uid=4798

What makes you think you, Gary, can fix problems that rural America may have?

You didn't read the article or my explanation. I would like you to provide ideas on how to fix rural America. errc says

I don't care about Caligula. I grew up in a rural town and if you have any ideas on how to fix the rural town's problems, let me know.

You could start by getting rid of the twenty square miles of cow patties and odiferous ungulates.

The odor just about knocks you off the freeway whenever you pass.

Being the epicenter of earthquakes doesn't help, either, do something about that.

Yeah, Harris Ranch feed lot. And earthquakes, was it a function of oil wells or the freeway being too heavy? :)

One thing is certain, fixing rural America is not easy. I am also interested in ideas for Michigan and western Pennsylvania and the deep South, where rural counties are hurting badly.

In the areas near my home town, farmers have a harder time. They cannot compete easily with bigger farms in the commodity food market. They have an advantage in the specialty / value added realm, though. For example, they can make their own cheeses, breads, wines, beers, or canned products. They can do organic meats as well. There are some successful businesses along these lines in the rural region outside of DC. Basically, they are developing provincial culture and products, which the French have been cultivating and protecting for hundreds of years. If I were involved in food production, that's the direction that I would go in. As far as manufacturing goes, I would look for parts that can be made by CNC or 3d printing, and try to find high value low production rate products to make.

As far as the country goes, we do have great infrastructure. We need to expand on that, and cheap abundant green energy has to be part of it.

There have always been large farms so even though Coalinga is rural it is contained within a fairly metro San Joaquin Valley, according to the map that comes with the article. So, clearly Coalinga is not a favorable place to do the smaller commodity farming.

Well, with the drought, do they even get water for agriculture??

The farms right around Coalinga, in its little valley called Pleasant Valley, close to the SJV has no more water and no more farming.

A rain dance.

Lol, Mark and Strategist. The point of the article is that people don't want to or can't afford to move often times. And some simply know no other work. And this is a large portion of the USA we are talking about.

Send more tractors and farm equiptment, get the Liberals the hell out of the way.

I grew up and lived in rurual small towns all of my life before I moved to South Florida.
And I can tell you, nothing makes them more livid and petrified at the same time than the thought of California or New York elitist plotting on "Fixing them".

They law a wake at night and wonder how to fix them.

I grew up in Coalinga. So, I don't care what the California or NY elite think. But your ideas of sending farm equipment is interesting. Tell me how it would be done properly.
