Anyone have advice on the cheapest way to replace a cracked Google Nexus 5 phone screen?

So far some sleazy-looking shops have tried to get me to pay $150 and $130, but I've heard it's possible for $50.

Is it possible to buy the screen and do it myself even?

Amazon sells screens. If you were in NYC, I'd suggest going to Canal Street where little shops replace screens at reasonable prices. Radio Shack offers a repair service, but I don't know anyone who has used it, and I haven't heard of (m)any people using it. If it would cost over $100 to replace the screen, you might consider upgrading the entire phone, and selling the old one instead of repairing it. The LG G3 D855 sells for around $400, including replaceable battery, infrared send&receive, and even an FM radio; it runs Android 5, though whenever I restart mine its default language reverts to something I can't read and I have to change it back to English.

Thanks BAO! It's a great idea, but looks like it doesn't cover me because I bought my phone at TMobile and not on the Play store.

I'll try to ask them anyway though...

They replied quickly on support.google.com, but no dice:

I'm sorry for the disappointing news, but I'm afraid we currently don't have any replacement program for cracked screens. I'm not sure where those rumors keep coming from. :(

I wonder if one of the surviving Radio Shack stores would be able to replace the screen at a reasonable price?

I see that the next generation of the Nexus 5 is about to be released. My old HTC Rezound is getting kind of old, but it still works. I hope they release a model that runs on the Verizon network. I would be interested.

In large part due to their simplicity, flip phones have a dedicated fanbase. Ask flip phone owners why they prefer flip phones to smartphones, and the number of reasons might be surprising. Price, size, and convenience are the most obvious explanations, but there are other reasons why many individuals favor flip phones over their sleeker, touchscreen counterparts. This guide explains the top reasons flip phones continue to be popular, despite the increasingly advanced technological innovations for smartphones. Flip phones are still available from a variety of retailers, including cell phone provider storefronts, electronics specialty stores, big-box stores, and wholesale buying...

Flip phone for talk/text and pad for internet is the way to go for me. Had a prepay $5 flip tracphone but running out of prepay minutes can be a hassle. Got a consumer cellular $35 flip phone with $20 a month for 750 minutes, no data works just fine. Even living in rural NE there's a always a wifi spot for the pad around if I'm travelling. There's nothing on the internet that can't wait 10 or 20 minutes till I can sit down with the pad.

Is the issue getting a new screen or not being able to install it yourself?

both.

The icracked service seems limited to Apple and Samsung products. Also, the linked article says, "With iCracked Advantage, customers pay $7 per month to be part of the program and then pay $25 each time they need a repair. So, the minimum cost would be $25+$7=$32, plus maybe tax.

"packages"

Their website tried to run too many scripts so I didn't read all the details but I suspect the packages might require an annual subscription, in which case the total cost would exceed $100. The cellular industry has become notorious for deceptive pricing and misleading marketing and PR, and of course the more they are allowed to get away with, the more emboldened and ambitious they become.

Our 14 year old daughter ordered a replacement screen from amazon for 35$, and did it herself. But that was for an iphone, so ymmv

Got it fixed for $135 at this place in San Francisco:

They did it on the spot in front of me and it seems as good as new. I'm happy with that.

That's the price for a new Moto G with Republic Wireless, a decent phone overall.
