" For 99 percent of people in America, when they go in to have surgery, the outcome [of that operation] is not measured. Nobody's keeping track. So I'm amazed at how one-fifth of the economy, [the share accounted for by the healthcare system], functions with so little measure of its performance."

Success? You mean did the check clear?

"There are financial incentives for companies not to know those answers. Hospitals, device makers, drug makers — if they're selling something already, the only news can be bad news, right?"

There should be a centralized system, but I'm not sure how much it would help.

Managed mutual funds have been established well beyond doubt to be a scam, yet putatively intelligent humans pile their funds into them anyway.

People will cheerfully ignore a surgeon's record if he has a firm handshake and a nice Rolex. This must be the best way to run a species, since it never seems to change.

Somewhere around 95% of the population would not use a blackjack basic strategy card if the casino handed them out, and blames other players at the table when the dealer doesn't bust.

tracking surgical outcomes would be bad for doctors. it would tend to weed out the bad ones. and the AMA is currently the 3rd top lobby by spending:

therefore, tracking surgical outcomes will not happen.

It's mainly the hospital corporations, which "profit more from surgical complications" and collect more than $1T/year. The AMA represents fewer than 20% of doctors, so blaming "doctors" in general is not very precise: most doctors disagree with the AMA about many issues including its endorsement of Obamneycare, which most doctors oppose. Besides, individual doctors don't even have direct control over many of the factors that drive surgical outcomes, for example whether the patient gets a hospital-acquired infection after surgery depends on what's floating around the hospital (e.g. MRSA) and whether all the staff follow infection control protocols.

I know tons of people who have left the legal profession, and far more who left engineering/technology as soon as they could. Pretty much any other profession has an attrition or failure rate.

I can think of only two failed/exited doctors I have met personally, in the sense that they left the profession, or were forced out, before retirement age. Only one was for incompetence; the second was for running a drug-prescription ring.

No wonder so many treat doctors like demi-gods. They're not allowed to fail.

Medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the US says Lissa Rankin at Tedx. https://www.youtube.com/embed/EUYLa7MAlPc
Stay away from doctors and their drugs and procedures, and the medical ripoff industry. Remember Joan Rivers, Micheal Jackson...
