He says that digital downloads killed Rock and he's sad they'll never have the same opportunity that he did. He says there's no industry support and no matter how good these kids may be they'll just fail because there's no one there to make them into rock stars.

marketing and any real capitol behind producing touring rock acts. No Money, no Rock N Roll.

What do you think, Rock the production, the business man, the corporation, the investors, the record labels, and the stadium tours all a thing of the past? Was 60 years of Rock-N-Roll just the longest running staged production? All just a well thought out elaborate mind romping. From the producers who placed 4 or 5 musicians together, put them in a rehearsal studio for a few weeks. Then record an album. Which producers and other technical production specialist tweaked and experimented with tracks and takes until their masterpiece albums were produced.
All the way from their equipment and gear selection, to their ultimate unique sound. These were all traits of any given band, that were only the result of a whole production team working tirelessly in the background creating the whole illusions of the stars we thought they were.

Then they took it on the road. Do you really think Jimmy Page wheeled his Ford Pick up truck to the front door of the arena then started off loading his gear? They had people for that too.

I think Internet drove the Rock show to the television screen. Talent reality shows is how the Rock N Roll show is done now. American Idol, X Factor, the Reality show sensations. Make them stars for a day, a week, a month, then on to the next one. Phil Robertson was damn near a Rock Star at one time, and he never played a lick. Hip Hop stars, I've heard Snoop Dog, and 50cents called Rock Stars. People are Rocking hairdos for crying out loud.
Yeah that's right you Rock those shorts, now let me see you pack a stadium with that Ass.

Who cares as long as they get to wear chains, tight leather pants, stay drunk and stoned all the time, and bone innumerable nubile groupies who pelt them with their sopping wet panties.

If Rock is Dead but the groupies are alive and juicy, Hail the Umlaut!

Besides, just because Gene Simmons is almost dead doesn't mean everything else is, that's a mite self centered.

Simmons is a world wrecking Boomer, die BoomerFuck, Fucking Die!

Yeah, but if the (admittedly) lame KISS never existed, we may never have been blessed with The Melvins.

In the seventies there were so many clubs with live music. There still are in some big cities, and I don't know what the story is in college towns.

Rock won't completely die as long as there are venues where band can cut their teeth while making a little income. If a band is talented enough after a few years in small clubs that they start creating great new music, the internet can help them get noticed. Who will be the next Bob Dylan, or John Lennon, or Neil Young, or who will be the next REM, or Radiohead, Smashing Pumkins, or White Stripes ?

This is a pretty sad time though for music. Rock is looked down as boomers are. "Hey, isn't rock the music that those people that ruined the world listen to?"

It's sad, because music can be a great source of healing or respite from modern day stresses. But I don't really see hip hop as being so good at that. Sure, venting anger and toxicity has it's place too, but I really have a hard time relating.

Then again, my Dad with his Andy Williams and Cole Porter type music and his mellow 60s jazz, couldn't relate to Jethro Tull or the Who either. So maybe it's just my ego and my age that makes me think it's worse now.

Anyway, I say Rock and Roll will never die. And I never was much of a Kiss fan.

Good point.

I do see that the decrease in money that can be made on records has had a pretty big impact.

Back in the day, if a band got up to where it got a record contract, they then would have the money to live while they immersed themselves in the the creative process and practice, while knowing there would be another good income stream from the tour that followed.

No Money, no Rock N Roll.

It's always been a struggle for artists to be renowned, beloved and on salary at the same time. The classic case is Frank Sinatra, or as in One, Johnny Fontaine.

Though he was well known, he needed the Syndicate to get him into movies so he could make money at the national level. This is what the kids today call "monetization". One horse's head later, bingo, he's got a revenue stream.

So, yeah, it's easy to be liked, and hard to get paid for it.

Gene Simmons has knowledge of Rock 'n' Roll?

Are you sure you don't mean Richard Simmons?

Yeah but they'll never be the productions that acts in the 60's, 70's, and the 80's. Nor will there be albums that had the skill and talent behind them.

Today everyone with a laptop and interface, call it a DAW and them selves a Producer. They are trying to reckon that they are a whole army of people. Audio recording was more than just the ability to record musicians.

This was NORMAL for kids in the 50s and 60s, even if they played something strange like an Eb alto horn.

I remember learning about music staff in elementary school. We had a thing called chorus. Although my daughters growing up, didn't learn about music until later in high school. And even then, I wasn't really sure if the school/teachers were just doing it, because they knew they had a learning aide at home in the form of Rockband and guitar hero.

Find me one 12 year old that can sight read to four sharps or flats for chrissakes.

Using sliderules and decoder rings were normal too. The world has moved on since.

Now, a kid gets a juice box just for being able to say saxophone without getting a facial hernia or needing medication.

Or a several billion dollars for starting a website that helps narcissistic personalities get their fix.

I want an LP with Nancy Reagan blowing Frank Sinatra on the cover while he croons. There must be one somewhere.

Impossible. He was just photographed at the 'expendables' event...
