The single best thing we could do is:

Declare Mike Shedlock our Teacher & Emperor for Life!

It is time to abolish collective-bargaining slavery once and for all. A properly written national "right-to-work" law would help do just that.

This is mindless right wing ideology.

If teachers unions are bullies, always forcing the govt. to get their way, how come after all that forcing for so many decades, the average teacher in a teachers unions makes about 55K ?

I'm not talking starting pay. That's average pay, for people that work about 100 times as hard as Mish does.

A while ago I saw an exhibit by a "Right to be Exploited" group at a Conference.

They had a map of where the union laws were weakest. Almost perfect correlation with shitty education: Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and other states with "Great Outcomes" for Students. States that get their asses kicked by Jamaica and Trinidad and Guyana.

I can't understand it, the top 10 graduation rates AND the highest standards AND the highest SAT averages were all in heavily unionized states. But that can't be, because Collective Bargaining never works, ever.

I don't know... Mush has swayed me, finally.

I'm moving to Alabama, so my kids can get that awesome education in a state where teachers' unions are illegal!

But California didn't make the top 10 despite being heavily unionized. Not even top 30. Not in graduation rates, not in SAT. What gives?

Kenosha?? Really and this is a trend? Let me know when Milwaukee or Madison do that. How come you didn't write about what happens in Oshkosh or Fond du Lac, WI??? Didn't realize these little itty bitty town now are hipster central.

After the last public employee janitor is fired, the last girl to have an abortion executed, and the last atheist college professor deported - in short, after the last American of their own class that wingnuts have been told to loathe, envy, and blame has been eliminated from society, and gun ownership is made universal among all remaining Christians, and yet America remains pretty much the same as it was, will conservatives turn on each other for being insufficiently right-wing? Or will they just suck harder on upper-class cock?

Whoah there, Mike Shedlock works harder than 100 people put together. And he can lift a VW Microbus off a trapped toddler while simultaneously indoctrinating them with Libertopianism.

An exception that proves the rule. I'm no expert on CA, but I understand that California has massive immigration from the third world, a ridiculous property tax system, and... most of all....

"Whole Language". While CA gave much of it up finally after much denial about lost ground, there is a whole generation of educators and educator educators whose foundation is WL based. All the best states - Wisconsin, Mass, Vermont - and better performing english-speaking countries - UK, Australia - that are kicking ass use (mostly) Phonics and reject (most) of Whole Language. The guy in charge, Hoggins?, eventually backed down from his support of WL.

(I'm sure the big publishers frothed when the country's most populous state decided to toss - actually there was a state TF that impounded Phonics material to prevent teachers from "accidentally" using them - their old textbooks and buy all brand new ones at $100+ a pop. )

You have no idea what you are talking about. California has some of the strongest unions and are probably the highest paid teachers in the nation, top 5 for sure, yet Oklahoma and Arkansas schools with their weak unions and "shitty" educations are ranked ahead of us, Arkansas in particular stomps Cali into the dirt when compared to the state as a whole. Of course the bay area has some of the nations best schools, but if you want to find the absolute cream of the crop high schools in the US, you will have to go to the private, and I believe non-unionized, schools in Texas.

Based on what? AR and OK have high SAT average scores because of a VERY low participation rate (only the top 5-6% take the test vs 55% here in Cali). Is that what you are going by?

US News ranks California's public schools #1 (I know, liberal media):
http://www.usnews.com/education/high-schools/articles/2013/04/22/how-states-compare-in-the-2013-best-high-schools-rankings

Of course other surveys with different methodologies will have different results. But I'm not aware of any criteria by which you can say that public schools in the deep south excel.

Shows you have no idea what you are talking about. California has the highest paid teachers outside DC and some of the strongest unions yet those states like Oklahoma you mentioned with weak unions and "shitty" educations rank ahead of us, and Arkansas is ranked waaay ahead of California. Not much can be said for Mississippi though.

Yep, Lakermania is the one who has no idea what he's talking about. The non-unionized schools of the Deep South are absolutely the worst in the nation, and preform below most third world countries. I have never seen a report by any respectable organization, media or academic, report that these states are not in the bottom quarter.

90% of NY kids - almost every student - takes the SAT. Only 4% of Arkansas and Oklahoma kids do. Here is a list of scores and participation rates:
http://www.commonwealthfoundation.org/policyblog/detail/sat-scores-by-state-2012

By every measure, unionized states produce more college graduates, attract more high tech business DESPITE the higher taxes and regulations (Insurance and IT needs educated employees, Hogging and Cotton Planting doesn't), students score very high on the SAT once you factor in the participation rate, aetc.

BTW, the CW foundation, the source for the SAT scores above, is a free market think tank - no liberal bias there.

15   lakermania   2013 Sep 17, 5:19am

A smaller percentage in OK and AR do take the SATs, they also score a whopping 150-200 points higher than California! Here is EdWeek's ranking, the most cited K-12 school performance and policy report card, of how the states fare.

California - 36
Oklahoma - 31
Arkansas - 4

http://www.edweek.org/ew/qc/2013/state_report_cards.html

AR and OK also have higher graduation rates than California despite having more economically disadvantaged kids.

16   B.A.C.A.H.   2013 Sep 17, 5:27am

Maybe you need to take SAT for places like Bob Jones Univ or Oral Roberts.

However, more than half of all California Students take the SAT.

Only 1 in 20 kids take the SAT in Oklahoma and Arkansas.

These scores compare half of the entire student population in California Schools to the cream of the crop in Arkansas/Oklahoma.

CA Policy is to encourage everybody to take the SAT to get as many kids into college as possible. OK/AR policy, being very poor educationally, state policy is to only encourage the smartest kids to take the test to make the state look better.
