If you have a wife, like professior shiller housing perma bear, you will end up buying a home. Now what can you do to save or make money with a 2,000 sqft home/ .5 acres of land that has good ROI and it is socially acceptable/safe with family.

1)So far I have winterized windows/large doors with plastic sheet , planning to keep some even in summer to avoid loosing cold air from home. Insulated hot pipes and rest of the home has insulation.
2) Going to plant few tomatoes , should save me few bucks
since water/fertilizer cost money, going to use gallon milk bottles to save rainwater and use as pot for my tomatoes.

Shiller is not a housing perma bear. He always understates how bad the housing market data is, what his own Case-Shiller index says the real fair market price should be. He's like the scientist who won't accept the correct predictions of his own theory because they are too scary. Think Einstein and black holes.
