I hear they are having mandatory evacuations of the entire east coast, NOT. I think the storm is way over hyped as well. It make hit the shore communities hard, but I'm not too concerned beginning several miles inland.

2   seaside   2012 Oct 27, 12:25pm

Gotta stuff the refrigerater up, and keep fingers crossed.

What else can we do? :)

Call it Crazy says

the beaches will take a pounding and there will be the normal power outages.

Yeah but on the upside people will exhibit etiquette and consideration at the red lights as they stop and allow those before them to go first.

The great thing about post hurricanes in South Florida, it's the only time it's NOT every man for him self.

4   elliemae   2012 Oct 27, 5:13pm

Good luck, guys (and gals)

5   anonymous   2012 Oct 28, 10:43am

Its all relative,,,,some of these areas in the path of sandy, have been hit hard with storms that caused mucho damage, but had little fair warning (a year ago it was the ice storms and the flooding,,, end of june wild storms ravaged the area and left a lot of destruction. So now they gotta pipe up with plenty of extra warnings,,,,and for those of us in the northeast,,,you know the weatherman is most always a mush

Actually I have been avoiding grocery stores for several days now in order to keep the amount of stuff in my refrigerator to a minimum, as well as making as much ice as I can. I think it's the amount of rain that's going to be the biggest problem, or maybe power outages. Flooding s a major issue around here because we get more car wrecks, and the side roads get flooded so it reduces that alternatives.

I think we are due for the maximum impact during Monday evening rush hour. I hope my work is closed on Monday.

I prepared for the hurricane by filling up my cars gas tank. I have my beater ready in case I have to drive in it, and if I am lucky, someone with good insurance will hit me.

It's a cat 1. Real men chase cat 5's in their cars with the roof down. Everybody up north is just being a pussy.

I like to wait for the eye to pass over and then go outside and beat god at a staring match.

8   MsBennet   2012 Oct 28, 4:41pm

I think it was delightful 78 degrees here today in Northern California. Best of luck to you all. Oh, and our boys won the World Series! Damn, it's good to be here at this moment....until the next big quake.

9   HEY YOU   2012 Oct 28, 6:20pm

I was waiting for someone to mention Climate Change.

10   zzyzzx   2012 Oct 28, 10:16pm

Looks like I gotta go to work, but I bet it's empty when I get there.

Just looking up and down the street, almost everyone is at home. The guy who works at WalMart, his car is gone, so I think they are open.

11   zzyzzx   2012 Oct 28, 11:02pm

No water in my basement yet.

12   zzyzzx   2012 Oct 29, 12:09am

I've got water in my basement. The drive in wasn't bad at all. Office just closed though, and I was only here maybe 5 minutes before they sent out the email.

Don't get all hyped up.... I think it's going to be less then is being predicted.... (and I'm right in the bullseye)...

That's how it always ends up in the DelMarVa area. By the time it gets that far north - it's toast.

What's strange is that this storm has a pressure of like 945 mb. which is normally a Cat. 3 storm but it's being reported as a Cat. 1 which is normally 980 - 990 mb...... strange....

The categories are all about wind speed.

This storm is coming in at a totally different direction then any other storm. The shore area looks like it's going to be hit hard. What's strange is that this storm has a pressure of like 945 mb. which is normally a Cat. 3 storm but it's being reported as a Cat. 1 which is normally 980 - 990 mb...... strange....

Maybe, but my folks are just reporting the typical rain/wind, noreaster feel.

If you ever wanna surf on the east coast - here's your chance.

17   zzyzzx   2012 Oct 29, 2:34am

Just got home from work, and the drive back was much worse.

18   zzyzzx   2012 Oct 29, 3:16am

Already canceled my hotel reservations for Atlantic City later this week. Of course they might have a hurricane sale for later this week though.

19   ordertaker   2012 Oct 29, 4:28am

Best of luck to everyone!

AC is underwater now at low tide (the real water, not mortgage)..

Pics? As of a couple of minutes ago, my local TV news just said that the storm speed has picked up considerably, so it will hit the shore earlier, and hopefully pass by quicker, leaving less rain. It's also going to hit further south, meaning it's aimed at Wildwood, NJ and should go right over the Cape May bridge. I expect the recent beach replenishment in Atlantic City to save the boardwalk.

If you have access to an HF radio and can get yourself over to 7.268 or 7.272 MHZ there are nets going with much better reports on conditions than anything available from the media.

23   taxee   2012 Oct 29, 6:50am

One more reason not to build on bottom land or steep hillsides.

24   seaside   2012 Oct 29, 7:26am

Holy crap.

The apartment building across my balcony got the roof blown away just a minute ago. Things are getting scary now.

26   zzyzzx   2012 Oct 29, 8:02am

I have had to vacuum out my basement and empty my shop vac 3 times already. I think it holds maybe 2 gallons before I have to empty it, if even that much. I think my last attempt to fix this problem helped some. This is the first time this year I have had this happen.

27   David9   2012 Oct 29, 8:40am

Hope for the best but be prepared, this is from Google:

http://www.google.org/publicalerts/alert?aid=98b903381f2f27d&hl=en&gl=US&source=web

"Historic and life threatening coastal flooding expected through Tuesday morning."

28   Dan8267   2012 Oct 29, 8:42am

No mega-damage yet, but a crane in NYC is falling over:

Leaving a crane out during a hurricane is just plain stupid. Even in Florida, we're not that dumb and we have more cranes than people.

29   EastCoastBubbleBoy   2012 Oct 29, 11:53am

Power is out, but otherwise no worse for the wear thankfully.

30   EastCoastBubbleBoy   2012 Oct 30, 2:15am

Still no power, bit major roads in the area are passable, and some parts of town have been restored.

31   seaside   2012 Oct 30, 7:31am

It passed my neck of woods in Northern Virginia. My apartment management had covered plastic sheet over the roof that's been blown away. I was heck worried about the same thing could happen to my building though, it hadn't happened. I do not have power loss except few flickerings turned my computer on and off yesterday. About 180,000 household in the area lost power, few people's home got busted due to fallen trees. some flooding here and there etc, but that's about it.

But as I see what happened in NJ and NY, I am begining to worry about people there. ECBB logged in and made a post, so I guess he is ok. But TechG is not on yet, and his place is fairly close to Atlantic city, so... Let's hope nothing bad happened to him.

32   anonymous   2012 Oct 30, 8:40am

I've been about much of southern\central NJ today,,,,so long as you're not on the coastline,,,the damage from the storms at the end of june were far greater,,,and likely cleared out most of the deadwood.

33   EastCoastBubbleBoy   2012 Oct 30, 11:04am

It could be worse ,but no power means no heat and no, water so in crashing at an old friends tonight.

For what it's worth the outages seem sporadic.

34   seaside   2012 Oct 30, 1:22pm

The zombies... tommorow is the halloween. This storm completely ruined the day, so I don't think there will be marijuana smoking kids kicking my door yelling treat or FU. But for those people suffering w/o power, I wish they fix everything soon.

I will go drive to those area I have my eyes on tomorrow, will check what it is like after major storm.

35   zzyzzx   2012 Oct 31, 12:34am

I have no electricity at home. I expect the food in my freezer and refrigerator to last quite some time, since I can't heat the house (essentially the whole house is a refrigerator). Most of my neighborhood is out (as in everything south of a certain point is out). It's dark and boring at home. My cats are way more cuddly though, since I am the only warm thing in the house.

Don't we have someone from Egg Harbor, NJ that posts here often? Anyone heard from them?

36   zzyzzx   2012 Oct 31, 12:42am

Call it Crazy says

Saw one open Dunkin Donuts with power, they had about 25 to 30 cars in line for their drive thru... apparently no one stocked up on donuts before the storm.

Pics?

37   zzyzzx   2012 Oct 31, 12:50am

This video shows the Atlantic City beach being 125 feet before the storm and 25 feet afterwards.
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/10/hurricane-sandy-destroys-atlantic-city-boardwalk/

What it's not telling you is that it was 25 feet a couple of years ago, and the recent beach replenishment probably saved much of the boardwalk.

38   zzyzzx   2012 Oct 31, 1:06am

Atlantic City Boardwalk Cats return:
http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/pets/Atlantic-Citys-celebrated-boardwalk-cats-weather-Sandy.html

when the eye of the storm passed over Atlantic City, apparently, according to one of the security guards at a casino, 25 cats were walking single file down the boardwalk looking just fine. And he said the cats he looks after - Pepper, Pewee - were all fine.

I was kind of expecting this to happen, since they aren't letting people on the island:

Snopes says its a fake: http://www.snopes.com/photos/natural/sandy.asp

I hope you get power back soon. In the meantime, my advice: whiskey is a perfectly serviceable drink neat at room temperature, and in a pinch can also serve as an antiseptic.
