I wouldn't stay anywhere in Oakland, but then I'm not a native here in the Bay Area.
If you are retired Military, you can stay on base at Coast Guard Island. Very nice and secure guest lodging.
I stayed at this hostel year ago, it's on an old army base turned park, and parking is free and easy. maybe the best deal in the city.

otherwise I would try air bnb or finding a place on craigslist.
you could also try a motel in alameda, and ride the ferry into the city.
my results from a quick search no endorsement beyond location, but they looked nice and cheap

Thank you times three! The Crimemap shows nothing happening in the area, that's extremely reassuring. I was concerned when the lady on the phone said "Don't walk to bart, it's not a safe area!" Still, the Yelp reviews were positive ("Cheap!" "Clean!"), and I'm sure we can find it with no problem.
Air bnb is fascinating but so far the places that could accommodate us are booked. We got a laugh out of this one:

This will be an educational trip, but that site would be educational in a non-academic way.
I'm looking up the other recommendations and again, thank you for your help.
Does anyone have an opinion about the safety of the Quality Inn located about a mile from the Coliseum Bart station? I'll have some kids with me and we're travelling on a budget, so that enters into the matter also. We looked into a Berkeley hostel (no parking) and some Oakland hotels (too expensive or scary-looking areas). Where would you recommend your relatives from Podunk stay if they were visiting you in the big city? Heartfelt thanks to you!
