I don't think it's that they lack intelligence as much as they fear being rejected by their "friends".

It’s You tube so some of you may want to pass and I’ll summarize. Sesame Street has Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop visiting and talking with Big Bird. A pig sees the attention Lamb Chop gets and dresses as a lamb. Big Bird, Shari, and Lamb Chop inform the pig that he cannot be something other than what he is just by changing physical appearance.
Contrast to modern times only 24 years later and Lamb Chops ass would be cancelled. Despite their bleats to the contrary, it’s the Democrats that lack intelligence.
