Freezing migrants cry foul as German cold bites

Berlin (AFP) - As the thermometer dips towards zero in Germany, thousands of asylum seekers spending their nights in tents are pleading for authorities to find them alternative housing.

"They say they are going to do something, but they are not telling us what. Maybe we are all going to turn to ice," said a 25-year-old Afghan who went by the name Hussein, and who has been living in one of several tent cities set up by authorities in the northern city of Hamburg.

"We cannot be under the tent for more than an hour at night," he said.

At the major northern port, as in other parts of the country, sleeping without heating is quickly becoming a nightmare as the temperatures tumble close to freezing.

And the German winter, infamously harsh and biting, has not even begun.

In Hamburg alone, 4,000 asylum seekers are sleeping in unheated tents, and some migrants, fed up with the cold and damp, have taken to the streets to complain about their lodgings.

We are freezing," they wrote on a cardboard sign.

But the problem is not unique to the city. With between 800,000 and one million asylum seekers expected this year, Germany is facing an unprecedented refugee relief crisis.

Some 42,000 asylum seekers were sleeping in tents across the country at the beginning of October, according to newspaper Die Welt.

And the situation has become critical, warned Ulrika Kostka, director of aid group Caritas.

"We can no longer rule out the risk that people could die" from the cold, she was quoted as saying by newspaper Tagesspiegel.

In the eastern Saxony region, the Red Cross also sounded a similar warning about tent cities.

"It has become a health problem. People are falling ill because of the cold," said spokesman Kai Kranich.

"We have distributed all the sleeping bags and blankets that we have but they are not enough."

Mobile heaters have been placed in tents to provide some warmth for now, said Kranich, but he warned that it was only a temporary solution.

- 'No magic wand' -

German authorities have been scrambling to find lodgings for the record number of new arrivals.

In Berlin, a special hall that is used every January for an annual agriculture exhibition, has been transformed into an emergency shelter with bunk beds for 1,000 refugees.

Sports gyms have also been requisitioned, sparking complaints from some parents whose children have been unable to go to basketball or volleyball training as both rain and temperatures fall outside.

Wooden shelters are also being built to protect migrants from the cold.

Winfried Kretschmann, the Greens party leader of Baden-Wuertemberg state, has warned: "We don't have a magic wand to create lodgings."

"At the moment we are managing, but it's going to become more difficult," he said during a meeting of state premiers.

And the emergency is not limited to cold nights.

In the days, too, hundreds of migrants queue outside Berlin's main refugee registration centre for hours every day, shivering and drenched under the cold rain.

A new registration centre has now been opened to bring some welcome relief.

But as Mario Czaja, the social affairs manager for the city, said: "Berlin used to receive between 1,500 and 2,000 asylum seekers a year.

"But at the moment, that's the number of refugees arriving every single day."

Out of curiosity, how many refugees are you housing??

dot says

Is it really fair that a Syrian family with three small children are sleeping in an unheated tent, while Hans und Helga with only one child enjoy a two bedroom apartment? Should children start dying from cold before the obvious solution is actually implemented, or the human race can just for once do the right thing at the right time?

Yes, unless Hans und Helga open their door and let the Syrian family in, which incidentally would entitled the Syrian family to all sorts of tenant rights that might well cause Hans Helga to lose their home under current laws.

Should children start dying from cold before the obvious solution is actually implemented, or the human race can just for once do the right thing at the right time?

Germany getting cold in winter is not exactly news. The Syrian parents should have done the right thing and stayed in Syria (or along the trek), and worked on providing a better future for their children. Of course, you are also free to offer enough money to buy Hans und Helga's home, and give it to the Syrian family. Why aren't you?

Forcibly taking Hans und Helga's home and giving it to the Syrian family would just turn Germany into another Syria.

If the right thing is to move these people to warmer, arab countries, then yes. Otherwise no.

Is it really fair that Germans and other Europeans are experiencing retirement age pushbacks, benefit cuts, frozen wages, then the same Neoliberals turn around and tell them they have to spend Billions of Euros absorbing a million migrants practically overnight?

How about to East Germans, who still experience double digit unemployment? How about the millions of un and underemployed Europeans generally?

The vast majority of MIGRANTS are unskilled, young and male. Children and Women are maybe 1 in 5 of them. They are at far more risk from being raped by their fellow migrants than by the German or Swedish population.

What's ultra rich about this is it comes flush on the heels of the UK and others trying to restrict Eastern European EU Member countries' (Poland, Bulgarian) migrants.

I don't see the morality in turning away "Family" members while giving up your own bedroom for total perfect strangers.

German Cops and Swedish Teachers are under gag orders not to discuss working conditions with refugees. Local CDU politicians, in revolt from Merkel who just destroyed her popularity in Germany, are revealing that there is endemic violence in and around migrant zones.

Who screws Syrian Families the most? The Angry Young Male Refugees, coming with legends of easy European Whore-women and free Welfare Money.

Watch what happens when a good Samaritarian Hungarian guy tries to distribute food and toys to the handful of families - he's swamped and robbed of his donations by young men. Watch the men snatch food and toys from little children and women.

This is a culture with no idea about merit or charity, where your status is inherited from your clan and family name, where what you get is determined by what you can steal or what you are entitled to by family relationships.

This is how it is in many parts of Africa and the Middle East, outside of Enlightened European Values.

When Americans, Asians or Europeans are poor, the men give up their food to the children. Even back in the dark days of the 19th Century. In the MENA region, men snatch most of the food for themselves, the kids eat last if at all. You grab what you can.

Look at all these "Syrian Families*". Angry Rock Throwers using Girls as Human Shields, Palestinian Style. So if the cops shoot a rubber bullet or bean bag round at the rock throwers, it'll likely hit the girl and they can wail to the Neoliberal MSM who won't show anything in context, only the girl's bloody face, that "Kul Wuhad! Girls are being shot by evil Nationalist Hungarian Nazi Soldiers! Birka Birka, Muhammed the Most Merciful! Orban Kurffar! Merkel Akbar! Ger Money Ger Money!"

You can see the rock thrower forcing the girl through the barrier and using her as a shield, it's disgusting. Won't see this on the Beeb or CNN.

People like Hollande, Merkel, and Cameron created the crisis, now they demand it be fixed on the backs of their own.

* Although only a fraction a Syrian, most are from elsewhere, including Morocco and Egypt. They buy Syrian passports on the black market.

Are you kidding? They preferred Germany over the country the United States has been bombing for 2 decades. Gee whiz, how unreasonable of them.

Germany, if they didn't have a bunch of TRAITORS running their nation, would have objected to this, and refused to accept refugees and condemned the United States.

I've been reading about Germany's Prime Minister Olaf Scholz. He was a socialist at least through his early 30's. Now he got handed this crisis as far as energy / natural gas and also immigrants by Merkel.

If anything I rather be in cold environment when I can sleep in a sleeping bag rated for cold temperatures and wear long johns underwear bottom and top.

That's better than trying to tolerate (without air conditioning) Florida panhandle high temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and a 65% relative humidity.

90 degrees is below body temperatures and 65% humidity is nothing. I lived in Indiana without air conditioning for 2 years. It would REGULARLY get to 100F at 100% humidity and that would last for 2-4 weeks. That's not hard to survive, although it's not comfortable. You can always take a bath or a shower to cool off if it really gets to you.

But weather below freezing, that will kill you. Turn off your heat for a month, or just keep it at 40F so your pipes don't freeze. Don't take warm showers, only cold water, and see how well you're doing in a month. It's far easier to survive the heat than the cold. Very old people die from the heat, or very overweight people do, everybody dies in the cold.

I'm checking various sites like weatherspark and it rarely gets above 90 degrees there. 100 degs F and 100% relative humidity ??? that doesn't even happen in LA (lower alabama) or even in Mississippi

I am saying if you guard yourself such as with long johns and sleep in a sleeping bag then you could survive the cold ...

I've slept outside in the coldest time of the year in Michigan when I was studying at a university ... it was along the Huron River and we did not have a fire going all the time ...

I lived just off from Broadripple Avenue. I don't care what the fucking weather maps say, I lived through it, and I had a thermometer.

I've slept outside in Northern NY in similar weather, but 2 days is enough. It's not easy. That's back when I was a kid. Cold weather is just horrible. Even when you jump into something that will insulate you, you have to warm it up.

Knuckle, and elbows crack because it's so damned dry. I recall it well. Hot weather isn't fun, but really cold weather is deadly.

We'll find out though excess deaths over the next 12 months in Europe.

Europeans for their own self interest should discard their alliances with the United States and ally themselves with Russia. The US should ALSO dump their alliance with Europe and ally themselves with Russia. The problem is that neither set of nations give a shit about their population. Our enemies are not foreign.
26   WookieMan   2022 Oct 14, 12:08am

I'll take cold weather any day of the week over 95º and humid weather. In cold I have the means to keep warm via many methods that don't require electric. Mind you I'm talking about a house. With passive solar warmth and a fireplace it's easy to keep a house at 40-50ºf with no HVAC or boiler heating system. If you have a propane grill just take the tank and buy an indoor safe heater. If it's 95º and no AC your house turns into an oven.

Fact is people should be smart enough in 2022 to know there's a conflict and possible gas shortages. You should be prepared in winter regardless of the energy situation if you're in a cold place. Heat waves even without electric outages kill substantially more people than cold weather. There would be zero homeless in Chicago if the opposite was true that cold weather is worse.

Cold deaths are rarely heard of, while heat deaths are super common here in Chicagoland. Remember I've been through the most ghetto buildings in Chicago summer and winters. I'm talking tenets and people that couldn't pay gas or electric. Even the dumbest of the dumb could keep warm in the winter. It was the summer that was dangerous when the 3rd floor unit with a flat black roof would get to 110-120ºf inside. You generally cannot survive that without AC.

I think I've posted this book before if you're looking for an interesting read on race, but also climate. https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/H/bo20809880.html

Heat is way more deadly. Iwog was hyperbolic about wet bulb or whatever, but he wasn't wrong that it was dangerous to human life. Fact is you can start fires when it's cold. You cannot create ice to cool you or AC if there's no electric.

Very true, as the closer the wet bulb temperature is to the dry bulb temperature (can be measured with the analog or mercury thermometer) then the higher the relative humidity. 100% relative humidity is when dry and wet bulbs are equal. I love being in Colorado Springs when the relative humidity was no more than around 40% during the summer and dry bulb temperature was 85 degrees.

The higher the relative humidity, the higher the heat index which poses a heat stroke risk and dehydration risk for temperatures that are above 80 degrees Fahrenheit (dry bulb).

Fortunately for where we live in the Florida panhandle, the relative humidity stays around 50% during the winter and the moisture is warm from the Gulf of Mexico, so that we never have to rely on turning on the heat pump cycle of our air conditioner. Only a few times did we use the electric oil-filled heater in a couple of rooms.

Thing is either event is (edit Isn't) very likely to happen, 0ºF or 100ºF for long stretches. At least here in the midwest. But when the extremes occur it's heat that exclusively kills over cold. If our power or gas infrastructure gets hit, I'd rather cope with cold during a week stretch of the cold months.

Someone from say Duluth, MN already has all the gear they need to deal with cold weather. I can promise that. You maybe get 2 months of summer up there. My BIL comes from Thunder Bay, Canada just north 2 hours. He's in Germany currently. He wears shorts outdoors when it's 20ºF. My kid is currently at the bus stop and it's 33ºF. Bus doesn't come till 8:15am central. He's wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt and has been there for 15 minutes already. Cold weather people are different breeds.
