Goals are the source of misery. An unattained goal causes pain, but actually achieving it brings only a brief satisfaction. A life made of goals is going to be disappointing. Yes, it might propel you forward, keep you turning the pages of your own existence but ultimately it will leave you empty. Because even if you achieve your goals, what then? You may have gained the thing you lacked, but with it, what then? - Matt Haig

Jim Carrey was mocking the self importance and absorption of Hollywood.

I am not sure the quote you posted does the same.

In the context of our modern society, goals are incredibly important, for both one’s physical well being and mental/emotional well being.

Most of us have the basic needs taken care of by someone else. We no longer spend enormous amounts of effort providing sustenance to our bodies, and building and maintaining clothing and shelter. Depending on where you live and how you came across your shelter, you may not even be spending and enormous amount of money on that(and incidentally that high cost is something I actually think makes many people who live in cities absolutely miserable). So the question does become, if not goals, then what?

I retire in less than a decade. I’ll have enough money that there’s no concern for my wife and I. We’re moving out of state and shelter should be a reasonable small expense compared to income. So then what? Then what is there’s travel we want to do, there’s places within less than a days drive I really want to explore…enough so that it should take me into my 70’s to do so. There’s hobbies I want to pursue moreso than I do know. There’s a few young nephews whose lives I want to influence. There’s things I want to experience in music and food. I’d like to be more involved in church than time currently permits.

All of these things are goals. Things I believe I’ll enjoy. The author of that quote, assuming there’s no additional context, seems rather nihilistic.
