One user told me that every time he closes the patrick.net tab in his browser, he gets logged out. That should not happen.

The only ways you should get logged out are:

1. clicking your icon and then "logout" in the upper right
2. clearing your cookies
3. quitting the browser (if your browser clears cookies when you quit it)

Grateful for any feedback.

Was he in "porno" (incognito) mode?

Auto cookie delete even some malware might clear cache after a set amount of time. Or browsing over a company network using DHCP and the network keeps setting new ip.

Noticed it a few times but it's mostly working.

Haven't noticed.

Or a browser extension which auto clears cookies when the tab is closed. Like certain privacy extensions possibly.

But porn mode is most likely. I doubt many people understand that porn mode behaves differently in many ways.

It's rare, but it does happen.

Please let me know if anyone can reproduce it.

Ah, maybe some users log in to patrick.net and then try to hit www.patrick.net

Different domain, so the cookie won't work.

Can I make a single cookie that will work for both domains?

A bit later...

Yes, I can. You just have to add a domain=patrick.net part to the Set-Cookie response from the server. OK, now if you log in to www.patrick.net you are also logged in on patrick.net, and vice versa. One problem solved.

@Patrick - You should be able to make a redirect so that www.patrick.net gets forwarded to patrick.net or vice versa.

BTW - I've (apparently?) been kicked out a few times. Where I was logged in, clicked a thread, and then realized there was no "reply" button, and I wasn't logged in. I'm not typical, I generally only go online in incognito mode just to prevent long term tracking from anybody. It seems like the longer I run an instance of a browser, the less likely it is to happen. It doesn't seem to happen on my junk phone which I occasionally use and don't bother with incognito mode since I use it very sparingly.

Thanks for describing it. I've never had that happen, but at least I have a little more idea of what people mean.

Shit, one problem solved and another one created. Turns out that if you add a "domain=.patrick.net" to a cookie, then that's a different cookie from one without that, even if they are otherwise identical. The net result is that people who are logged in with the old kind of cookie (without that domain param) will probably find that their next log out won't work until they actually remove old the cookie from their browser, using their browser's "clear cookie" method. But after that, log in and out should work fine, and logging in to patrick.net will also log you in to www.patrick.net (which are the same server anyway, just different DNS names for it).

I could have done the redirect thing, but the cookie domain param is now in place, and that will work too, at least after the first logout and login.
