My friend in Santa Cruz (ex military, gun expert and teacher to military) is going to take me to a firing range to review some of his guns and give me lessons, and I am going to buy one of them. He likes the 9mm Baretta. He knows the guns' limitations and the situations in which to use them, how far from target etc. However, I will also get something non-lethal, like a mace powder gun or taser type thing.

The problem with non-lethal stuff is the criminal and gang buddies live to come back again later. I was thinking of immobilizing and giving them an ice pick lobotomy (takes just a minute). They live, but their memory, motivation and mental capacity is impaired forever to the extent I don't have to worry about them returning. Nobody would even check them out for it, they would just look like they got hit in the face with black eyes for a while.

California doesn't make this so easy. For example, you won't be able to get a concealed-carry license, which would alleviate a bunch of annoying restrictions. Remember to stay clear of the "school zones" when open carrying in a locked box with the ammunition carried separately! You can't mail-order ammunition in Sunnyvale (maybe all of CA?) because of laws requiring tracking purchases.

With respect to your campsite... what do you do when you go day-hiking from your campsite? Do you bring a government-accpetable safe to your "home" and lock your gun when you head off for the trail? How do you bring the piece in the 50 foot walk from the access road to your campsite?

Loaded magazines can be transported inside that same container, just not insereted in the gun.
3. It's legal to carry a concealed loaded handgun in CA while engaged in hunting or fishing.

However, if you're transporting in your car you need the firearm and ammunition in separate compartments with the firearm not accessible by occupants inside the car. Plus, without your car, you can't simply walk through the school zone without the requirements you mention. Many of the requirements are at least partially eased with a concealed-carry permit, which is (as I mentioned) very difficult to get in California.

The supposed requirement to have weapon in a separate container from the ammunition and not accessible by occupants is false. All the law is requiring is a locked container of some sorts and magazine not inserted into the gun. That's all. You can have a pistol and a loaded mag in a fanny pack locked with a tiny "TSA lock" and you will be completely legal.

It's a 2006 edition but there were no changes in this particular area of CA gun laws since then.

My friends still in LA tell me its out of control and you can never let your guard down. My wife is down there right now. She told me a lot of the stores and restaurants that we use to enjoy are gone and are closed some replaced with Mexican stores/resteraunts after covid closures.

I suggest my Cali friends look at how to get a concealed carry license, train, and learn how to draw and get off controlled pairs (practice at your local range). Most "dindus" won't charge into fire, and will literally scatter off like roaches, pulling up their pants the entire way.

If you can't get one in your county because it's full communist (like LA County, or SF), carry pepper gel/spray. If you get them right in the face, they will be incapacitated in seconds, and will be pretty much done for hours where you can either beat them into unconsciousness and dump their body on the side of a random road, or you can zip tie them and call the cops to pick up the trash.

99% of the time, I never unholster my gun. I take it out to sometimes to change ammo, and clean, but usually stays holstered. But you never want to be in the situation where you need it, and you don't have it (the 1% of the time). There have only been 2 situations in my life where I "could" have drawn, but just the mere threat of me drawing totally deescalated the situation to where the other person just left.

I think it has to be habit, at least it is for me. I have an EDC list that I usually go with everywhere; Glock 19 or Glock 26 with 2 magazines, Spyderco folder 4'', Omega Speedmaster, Wallet (with cash, 2 credit cards, ID), car keys, and wedding ring.

I don't even think about any of the above, when I go out, I take it and it's on me.

It's only a misdemeanor to carry a gun registered to you w/o a permit. And if you have to use it getting slapped with a misdemeanor charge is suddenly waaaay low on your list of scary things. If you feel you need to carry - carry.

That's about the long and short of it. When a crime wave stays confined to the lower classes, the rich can safely ignore it. They don't live in those areas, they have gates in front of their houses, and they have alarm systems and other layers of protection meant to keep that chaos from their doorstep.

We keep zero cash… only use credit and have it automatically paid each month. We have apple products that are all password protected and basically bricked and useless to any thief. Big screen TVs are worth peanuts and hard to steal. My wife wears costume jeweler. Her engagement ring is probably the only thing I’d miss if stolen. If you keep hard valuables like gold or jewelry in your house you are usually evading taxes. If you have huge amounts of cash your mattress you are probably a drug dealer.

Yep, in my multimillion shack there is literally less than 1K worth of easily re-sellable goods. Apart from the gun safe, that is. But that thing is half-ton and bolted the fuck down, i.e. smash-and-grab won't fly and anything more elaborate won't be allowed enough time.
