Or, oh what a difference a spray makes. China, South Korea, Japan, and Iran underwent spraying campaigns of urban streets, transport, and offices.

The US, France, Spain, and Italy have not sprayed. All four are on the same mortality curve, doubling total deaths every 2 days (or so).

China's curve, even at its worst (Jan 24 - Feb 24th) was never so steep, doubling every 6 days after 100 deaths, then inflecting by Feb 15th. Iran's curve has doubled every 4-5 days since 100 deaths (March 4th). South Korea has yet to reach 100 deaths.

All three of the second group have sprayed extensively (as has Japan). The first videos of Chinese spraying appeared on the CDC's Youtube channel Feb 4th; Iran's appeared March 5th; and South Korea's Feb 29th.

The US should find out what "disinfectant" has been used (to greater success in South Korea and Japan, and lesser in Iran) and use it here. Post-haste. Perhaps China wouldn't share such info with us, but our allies should.

Masks.

WOW. Are we really that stupid that we cannot understand how Taiwan, Singapore and Korea have contained the virus WITHOUT shutting down the country?

MASKS. MASKS. MASKS.
If you see videos of most Asian countries about the virus - it shows EVERYONE wearing masks. I just moved back to USA from Asia. I called my contacts recently. Korea: Not allowed into the building without a mask. Same in Taiwan. Singapore. Hong Kong.

How many masks do we have in the USA? None. People bought them up and sent them to China back in January and February.

** MASKS ARE THE BEST FORM OF SOCIAL DISTANCING. *

Note: Masks are to protect everyone from infected people infecting the population. They are only marginally effective in preventing the wearer from being infected.

In Asia, it is normal to wear a mask if you have a cold. It is part of the social fabric - kind of like opening a door for an old lady here in the USA.

* MASKS ARE MUCH CHEAPER THAN CLOSING DOWN THE COUNTRY *

TESTING. TESTING. TESTING.
Of course we dropped the ball on testing as we did the masks. Why are we developing our "own" tests? These countries have the testing down to a McDonalds' drive thru system. Why the hell aren't our "F'en Experts" on a plane to Taiwan? Taiwan has the most successful country in controlling the virus. And then Korea. Are we too arrogant? Or just plain old stupid? HOW HOW HOW CAN THEY HAVE TESTS AND WE DON'T. WHY CAN'T WE JUST MAKE THE SAME TESTS THEY HAVE?

And they take temps everywhere. They have been doing this since SARS. You get your temp taken in every airport. Now all schools take temps several time a day and many building do also.

QUARANTINE
Up until 10 days ago people were still flying in from infected areas and running around infecting people. Long ago Taiwan had a quarantine policy for anyone coming from an infected area. And they enforced it with a HUGE fine.

TRACKING
Other countries have a HUGE team tracking everyone who had come into contact with a known infected person. All of those people are quarantined and get tested several times.

So far what have we done? Masks - nope. Testing - nope. Quarantine - nope. Tracking - barely.

We have screwed this up royally. Our leadership's lack of response will lead to many deaths and one of the greatest economic crashes in history.

LIFE IN ASIA
I had a video conference with a client in Korea. They warned me that everyone will be wearing masks. They said they are not allowed into the building without a mask. I asked one guy if had been tested. He answered "Not today." He said they get tested once or twice a week as they are working the office rather than remotely.

I was supposed to attend a conference in Taiwan. Here is the message I received about attending:

"For the domestic events we have decided to move forward with, we will be adopting the following precautionary measures to keep our attendees and employees safe. We will be taking participants temperatures and providing alcohol spray on-site. Attendees will be required to wear masks throughout the event, and will also need to sign a certification form declaring that you have not been overseas or been in close contact with anyone who has contracted the virus within the last 14 days."

With all due respect, GlobalRoamer, they were wearing masks in Wuhan since December, and were in semi-quarantine (I have a Chinese colleague who works there and reports back ... as much as she can with the government overseeing e-communications). The numbers were climbing upward until the government began mass spraying late January through mid-February.

Yes, masks help but they're no panacea.
