Wendy's to offer Chili in the can... up the can? So some genius at Wendy's failed to get the memo that Wendy's chili jumped the shark and least ordered item on their menu. Dave Thomas was a very resourceful frugal man. The only reason he made Chili and integral part of his Burger Franchise formula. Was very simple. He sold hot fresh and juicy hamburgers right off the grill. I worked at Wendy's way back in my youth. Right just a few years before Dave sold it, back when they had a breakfast menu, and salad bar. Two other features he added later to use up the daily supply of produce, and keep it fresh. The more lettuce and tomatoes you buy the cheaper you get them. The Salad bar became necessary as he engaged in the ever escalating burger wars of the 80's. He needed to sell as cheap as possible to keep up with the price wars, while cutting as much waste as possible. Then he added the breakfast menu to use up the diced ham and cheese on the salad bar. Wendy's ability to constituently sell hot and juicy 1/4 Hamburgers, was due to putting unsold cooked unsold burgers in a pan of broth, and use it for Chili the next day. Now their burgers come from the freezer, their Chili is nothing like the Wendy's Chili back when people would by it by the tub. I believe their chili comes in a bag now, they don't make it on premise with fresh cooked hamburgers. I can't see this lasting very long. I can't see Wendy's lasting very long for that matter. I ordered a Wendy's Classic Chicken sandwich the other day and it looked like a dollar menu Chicken wafer patty, thin, dry and hard.
I was hungry, so I begrudgingly ate it grumbling that Dave Thomas would be rolling over in his grave, the whole time.
disclaimer, I worked for Wendy's when I first moved down here to South Florida. I met Dave Thomas during my training. The location was on 17th street causeway, and a pet location for Dave. .

I remember this exact Wendy's policy as a case study in a management class.
I won't eat for days if that's the alternative. I bring spices on trips to cook my own food. Plane or car. I don't even like sit down restaurants. I got double thumbs up from a chef buddy on my recent visit to Montana for an out of the box brat recipe. Was delicious. He concurred.
People are too pigeon holed into the same thing. Honestly if there was another Patnet meet up I'd rather have it be back yard or picnic style. Used to go out to eat 2-3 times a week. I've just stopped. Still happens, but even at former good restaurants the food has gone to shit. About to marinade some tocos al pastor. I'll cook those tomorrow on the grill. I'm in a taco and pizza phase.
