I looked up that guy they are sobbing about in the article: per county records his base salary in 2017 was $52K. Why the fuck he is staying with that San Mateo outfit when BART Police recruits get starting salary of over $100K is beyond me.

Police in our city start at $93k; admittedly, they are selective as they require a college degree...

That's great pay to be a Muggers' Concierge.

Base pay is a made up number that cops and teachers use to claim they are underpaid. The Total Compensation package is the real number and San Marco starts at over $100,000.

So there is no real reason for him to sleep in the car then. Except greed and stupidity, of course.

And the fact that you cannot afford to live on the Peninsula if you only make $100,000 a year

Meh....it's expensive for sure, but plenty of people manage on much less.

This is a pile of horseshit.

They can get other jobs or leave the area.
13   tovarichpeter   2019 Aug 23, 8:03am

They can’t get other jobs that pay more than $100,000 a year, and most do eventually leave the Bay Area

$100k is absolutely fine salary for a single guy living in San Mateo county. Especially taking into account that popo is a blue collar job. And they have pensions. If he has a family his wife will have to work. Boo-hoo, most engineers in that area earn not much more and their wives have to work too.
15   tovarichpeter   2019 Aug 23, 8:53am

You obviously do not live on the Peninsula

BTW I am not suggesting that police salaries are too low. Actually California has the highest paid cops in the world

Wrong: I work there, have many co-workers and friends who live there and I myself lived there until 2014.

Not to mention they do retire at 55. Not 65, not 75, but 55. Add 20 years of pay someone has to work in order to achieve same level. Unions conveniently ignore that part.

Why? It's called "fake news."
19   BayArea   2019 Aug 23, 7:19pm

$100k on the peninsula? Today?

Gosh, That’s sounds absolutely awful.
20   FortWayneAsNancyPelosiHaircut   2019 Aug 23, 9:09pm

100k
pension
full benefits
retire at 55

most of the country would kill for that kind of pay. but it's union, so you have to be friend or relative of someone there in order to be hired. all unions are a buddy system.
21   BayArea   2019 Aug 24, 7:01am

Cops aren’t allowed to do their work here in the Bay Area. So I guess $100k to do half the job description isn’t so bad.
