I think it’s middle class people finding it harder to manage having kids, in addition to establishing two careers, a household, and managing their social lives. There are so many distractions and cultural “musts” that are really frivololities to keep people putting off the kids until later. And when later finally arrives, she’s older and barely able to manage one. They are worn to a frazzle by a demanding infant/toddler, and they stop. My wife’s best friend is in that camp. She got married the same year as we did, but they messed around doing fun things like traveling the world while we got busy and had three kids. They finally had one and it was hard, very hard. They love their daughter, but it’s too late for more.
