I really don't respect people that use Facebook.

The rule is simple - if you have to actually give our your real name, and confirm your identity in any way (like phone number, a "valid" email - I'm using https://mailinator.com here) etc, use a different site. There's literally no reason for Facebook, Google, Yahoo, or anybody to have your phone number unless they are doing MORE than monitoring you. They can find you through an IP address. We all have static IP addresses now (remember when we paid extra for that "feature"?)

Your IP address will never change until you change services.

I'm reminded of some protest, anti-mandate, anti-authoritarian groups using Telegram to communicate. You have to give them your phone number to use Telegram. They have to really not understand what they're up against if they use those kinds of services.

Right, I don't really care if someone uses a permanent email to sign up on patrick.net. But I do ask for an email for a few reasons:

1. Because they are globally unique identifiers.
2. So that they can get then emails of posts by a user, comments on a post, and likes if they want.
3. So that I might be able to get two people in touch with each other outside the site if they both want.
4. So someone can prove ownership of their account if they want me to change something.

Snowden was stranded in Russia, for propaganda purposes. He had no intention of ending up there.

I've considered he might be a CIA agent that was being used to discredit the NSA. It was the NSA he blew the whistle on, but the CIA has identical capabilities, and it's entirely illegal for the CIA to be working on American soil.

Everything you write online can (and probably is) intercepted. It may be encrypted, but it's stored for a period of time.

They might be, but at least they have demonstrated government criminality. They can TELL you about it, but you just go "ho hum", it's not their fault. I don't see Snowden or Greenwald as having done anything wrong yet, there should have been an uproar over what the NSA and CIA were doing, and people should have gone to jail.

Parts are redacted. This is common to prevent information that should be classified from being declassified. Wikileaks does the same thing, they always talk to the State Department before they release information. The aim is to expose government malfeasance, not hurt their defense measures.

he did, it was published, its how we found out about NSA spying on all of us. Fucking Bush cronies tracked him down, so he fled. He was lucky enough to flee the swamp regime.

The solution is in computer hardware and protocols. It's not asking the criminals to stop being criminals because they aren't going to do that.

We have 256 bit encryption now, and if I were to implement my own encryption, and keep it secret, it's impossible to break. We can do one time encryption now - basically, I could give you an SD card filled with random data, and have my own copy with the same random data, and just use XOR to send data using each byte ONCE.

That's impossible to crack. It's $33 to buy a 256GB SD Card now! That's like 100 films that are stored in quality that is high enough to present in a movie theater! IT'S CRAZY!

He was headed to Hong Kong and his passport was revoked when he was in Russia.

It's not outside the possibility that Snowden is deep cover CIA - he did previously work for them. One hypothesis is that he had a mission to discredit the NSA, the CIA was (still is) doing the same thing but Snowden never blew the whistle on them.
