Clearly that ethicist was racist for inconveniencing the thief and no leaving the keys in the unlocked car.

How did we get to this point....?

From the article:
"I also shudder to think how many young black men vaguely matching his description were harassed by officers after my call."
Response: probably lots of them, but not due to your call.

Seems like just another virtue signaling article. Writer wants to point out how concerned he is for the plight of young black males. What I don't understand is, since it's so terrible in the USA, why he doesn't high-tail it back to Ghana where there are no white police officers.

Here's a wikipedia snippet of the author: Kwame Akroma-Ampim Kusi Anthony Appiah is a British-Ghanaian philosopher, cultural theorist, and novelist whose interests include political and moral theory, the philosophy of language and mind, and African intellectual history.

"While I was contorted by PC correct White Guilt, he robbed five more cars and fled."

Ethicist: "Yes, and you should have gotten his address and sent him a thousand more dollars in reparations."

Twilight zone

If this NYT article is a popular opinion, we must be heading towards civil war

The comments are precious. I like this one:

"I leave my doors unlocked so that I can avoid paying for a new window that would be less than my deductible. I don't leave anything else in my car to be stolen.."

When I had a cheaper car, I operated that way too. Plus, in the days before fancy electronics, it was inconvenient to bother with locking/unlocking with the key.

It used to be a reasonable approach (especially for convertibles where a cut top meant tons of hassle even if insured with $0 deductible) but now the fucking homeless/junkies not only steal stuff but can turn your car into a drug booth or a toilet. Or both.

This is why cars should come with interior motion detectors and nerve gas release mechanisms.

I've always thought it was funny how "ethicists" usually don't know right from wrong.
15   clambo   2019 May 11, 8:56am

What is so absurd it that someone 1. wrote the NYTimes about the experience 2. thinks this is an issue of ethics.

That takes wisdom. Choosing “Ethicist” as a career is a gross display of folly. So self-selection of idiots for Ethicists means the field is utterly useless.

No, you should have shot him, as would have been done in the jungles of Africa . . . thereby undoing all the mistakes along that thief's genetic line in the past few hundred years moving him and his ancestors out of Africa and giving them opportunitites, as well as saving the next black girl from being impregnated by a criminal thug.

Yeah, I used to do that with my jeep. In fact in SF I used to get hit up for money by bums when I parked. I'd say, "All I have is the change in the ash tray." (pointing at jeep as I walked off) "The door is unlocked, you can have the change."

They never took me up on it. Maybe they thought it was a trap.

I never did that with my car though. I just made sure there was nothing in it visible worth stealing.
