Firefighters are battling a massive blaze which broke out at the world-famous Notre Dame cathedral in Paris this evening.

Pictures posted on social media showed enormous plumes of smoke billowing into the city's skyline and flames engulfing large sections of the historic building.

According to French newspaper Le Monde, the fire broke out in the attic of the monument before spreading across the roof.

A spokesperson for the cathedral said the blaze was first reported at 5.50pm (GMT) and the building was evacuated soon after.

Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to restoration works as the peak of the church is currently undergoing a 6 million-euro ($6.8 million) renovation project.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo says firefighters are trying to contain a 'terrible fire' at the city's Notre Cathedral.

Hidalgo urged residents of the French capital to stay away from the security perimeter around the Gothic-style church. The mayor says city officials are in touch with Roman Catholic diocese in Paris.

The cathedral is one the finest example of French Gothic architecture in Europe, and one of the most visited buildings in the world.

Notre Dame - which means 'Our Lady' - was build in 1160 and completed by 1260, and has been modified on a number of occasions throughout the century.

It is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, and is visited by some 12million people every year.

After it gets rebuilt into a mosque, it will be called "Notre Allah".

There are many incredible Gothic Cathedrals, but this one being in Paris has a special meaning, particularly for the French. It seems that the authors of the posts of this thread represent well the stupidity, associated politics and opportunistic drivel of this site and likely never visited this remarkable Cathedral or if they did were so locked in the contracted smallness of their world were unable to appreciate the experience.

What's a religious building burned to the ground?

A good start?

This has nothing to do with religion. This is the center of a country and a culture.

Macron said he will have "the best workers in the world" rebuild it. Maybe Chinese?
NPR started news this morning by gloating about the European Union countries promising funds to rebuild it.
It will be rebuild into something global with a vague French after taste.

It's like the American flag on the moon after Hollywood dealt with it.

it'll require approval from every PC department, so gender neutral, culturally vague, all inclusive kumbaya... no references to "god" or anything of that sort.

Has anyone brought up how the fire was reported before it was detected, or started in two places at once? Or how a newsource had a tweet taken down where they say the caretakers claim it was arson?

Macron is desperate to get rid of yellow vests. Desperate enough to burn down a historic landmark to do it..

Prediction: Macron will do anything possible to pin this on gilets jaunes. Public support for yellow vests has only increased over the last ~20 weeks and he's up against the ropes.

This reminds me of the book written back in 2005 by George Heigel "The Cube and the Cathedral":

Excerpted from a summary of the book:

"George Weigel offers a penetrating critique of "Europe's problem" and draws out its lessons for the rest of the democratic world. Contrasting the civilization that produced the starkly modernist "cube" of the Great Arch of La Defense in Paris with the civilization that produced the "cathedral," Notre-Dame,"

"...during the debate over a new European constitution-that only a public square shorn of religiously informed moral argument is safe for human rights and democracy. The most profound question raised by The Cube and the Cathedral is whether there can be any true "politics"-any true deliberation about the common good, and any robust defense of freedom-without God. George Weigel makes a powerful case that the answer is "No"-because, in the final analysis, societies and cultures can only be as great as their spiritual aspirations."

Also in the book he says that on tours of the Great Arch La Defense, or "the Cube" in its title, guides make the statement that three Notre Dame cathedrals could fit inside the Cube. An analogy would be that the Hope Diamond can fit inside a coffee can, but it neither raises the value of the coffee can nor diminishes in any way the value of the diamond.

I've visited "the cube" in Paris (actually in the peripheral town of La Defense)... It is one of the best places to visit when you're in Paris. Why? Because it's roof offers a beautiful view of the Champs Elysses and Paris' gorgeous architecture. Also, when you're on it, it's the one place where you can't see the banal, ugly, trite Cube itself.

This.

And it's the underreported story of the year. The protests have been going on for months, and the core of the protesters are self-employed and the older, pensioner (White) crowd. There are still daily demonstrations all over France.

Macron's problem is that it's "Leaderless Resistance" so there isn't a coterie of Socialist Union Leaders to bribe with high paying Admin jobs to stop the protests - precisely because they are cab, ambulance drivers, pensioners, etc.

I don't know how he jumps from cube vs cathedral to whether we can do things without God.

We can certainly have spiritual aspirations without God. Check Buddhism.

And the main difference between the cube and the cathedral is that the cube is the result of capitalism: we just won't an extra buck to make things nice beyond the purely functional. We certainly use stones rather than concrete. This is why there are pretty much no cathedrals in the US though they have the means to build fantastic ones. This is not because Americans are not more religious than the French.
At least the French took the pain to build an original "Cube" where in America there would be just a plain tower.

Too much holy water and incense to the new look. I like the skylights, though.

France will open the redesign of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral’s historic spire to international architects

Why keep anything French?

Mobile Home burns down March 1st, by March 7th, a week later, Authorities are STILL investigating if it is arson, though they suspect the occupant of starting it.
https://www.grandhaventribune.com/Law-Enforcement/2019/03/07/Investigation-continues-in-mobile-home-explosion-fire

But one of the largest Medieval Buildings and a massive historical monument with multistory spires? Even before they begin interviewing the workers, they've all but ruled out arson. And somehow know of a computer bug in the fire alarm system. During a wave of Church attacks, including others on historical, ancient churches.

No way, French are way too frightened to offend Muslims.

They will say, “thank you sir, may I have another”
