There has been a lot of uprising in Germany against this and the Germans have partly been held hostage due to their history. Even the US benefits every time the neocons start yet another a senseless war in the middle-east and Germany opens the flood-gates - less war rapefugees coming to the US. I'm pretty sure there was some US pressure as well before Trump. Anti-immigration parties and initiatives now make up a quarter of the population, and the trend is rising. The remaining ones are simply not woke yet, and having been pressured by the globalist left into servitude for their guilt-complex. There always has been traditionally a level of stupid anti-americanism, but it's somewhat understandable if you're an occupied nation even though they are too stupid to understand how far worse they would have fared under the Russians. The reality though is that more and more are joining anti-rapefugees and pro German/European nationalist movements and those movements are generally US (and Israel) friendly. Germany is single-handedly running the EU economy while paying each member nation and each rapefugee family large sums of money while their own elderly just scrape by after 40 years of working and paying into social security. They are de-facto governed by a hostile body and media who has too much power over public opinion forming. But it's changing. Takes time. Nobody thought Trump would take office, or Salvini, Kurz or Orban, but they did. There is hope.

They do which is very un German. If they would kick out all immigrants leeching of welfare and free Healthcare they could easily pay down some of it.
And even with low defense spending, Germany has high debt to GDP.
