I think the lyrics are hilarious and see nothing to be offended about, a big to do about nothing. My paternal grandfather (1867-1961) used the "N" word all the time, would take have his harmonica in his pocket when he went to Sunday school in the businessmen's department. Every so often the other members would humor him and ask him to play and when they asked him what it was he played he'd chuckle and say "Run, N****r, Run!" to everyone's delight.

The difference here is Mr. Johnson the friendly Negro door man didn't whip his harmonica out of his pocket and hand it to your granddad and ask him to regale us with his rendition of down by the old mill stream.
