The mayor of San Francisco says he's hiring 10 workers whose sole responsibility will be to clean up needles littering the streets.

San Francisco Mayor Mark Farrell said Monday the team will respond to resident complaints and remove needles and syringes from "hot spots" every day of the week.

Farrell tells the San Francisco Examiner that discarded syringes on the streets are among the top litter complaints in the city with a growing homelessness problem.

Public Health Director Barbara Garcia says the city will provide $750,000 to the AIDS Foundation to hire the new needle clean up team.

Lol. Even on the cheap end of salary, this is easily a $500k/yr program. To pick up needles. It would probably be closer to a million per year once you start factoring in these employees will likely get pensions.

I don't know the cost of those used needle boxes you'll sometimes see in restrooms. But couldn't you just sink $500k into those boxes in the hot zones for this type of activity? Of course some won't use them and still throw their needles on the ground. Hiring 10 people to do this task seems like a massive waste of money though.

If the boxes don't work, enforce litter laws. Or make new biohazard laws for littering needles that puts the person in jail for 3 days on first conviction, mandatory. Word gets out around the junkies about getting locked up and I think you'd see needles on the street disappear rather quickly. They don't have money, so hit 'em where it hurts, their habit.

A sniper on every block to take out needle droppers would attract volunteers or people who would pay to do these chores for entertainment.

This works too.

It's the perfect self-promulgating bureaucracy solution for libbys! Create the agency that gives out the needles and coddles the homeless, than create another agency to clean up the irresponsible mess the homeless create. Two tax sucking bureaucracies for the price of one!

It's so heartwarming when tax sucking bureaucracies breed and feed on each other.

I wouldn't doubt that, lol. I was trying to be conservative. I suppose at even $100k a year they'd probably be commuting from 3 hours away, each way, so they have to up the pay.

Either way, why the fuck would you pay someone even $25k/yr to pick up used needles? You can legislate it much cheaper and put the junkies on the hook for their biomedical waste they're dumping on the street. 3 days mandatory jail if caught dumping a needle. And have the city throw out 200-300 needle boxes in the bad areas so there's no excuse.

But no, patronage hiring is a lot more lucrative for government bureaucrats.

Why can't they make the homeless and illegals pick the needles and shit-no do work, no food/benefits?

Dude, dude, dude! Stop! Don't you know that CA jails are "overcrowded" and many felonies have been re-legislated as misdemeanors in order to not put anyone in jail? You can literally break into a house and steal a gun and not go to jail, provided the gun you steal is less than $950. True story.

Now that you know these important details about The Land of Fruits and Nuts, go back and re-evaluate your proposal.
